ANT 210 Cultural Anthropology<br />

Exploration of the study of culture. Includes scientific and humanistic legacies of cultural anthropology, effects of<br />

paradigms on research focus and findings, survey of models for analysis, ethnographic studies, and evaluation of models<br />

and styles in anthropology.<br />

ANT 215 The Nature of Language<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Introduction to anthropological linguistics. Includes the history of linguistics, descriptive linguistics, sociolinguistics,<br />

language and culture, and language and biology. Also includes language acquisition, language and education, and the<br />

history of language and writing.<br />

ANT 225 Principles of Archaeology<br />

3 cr. hrs. 4 periods (2.5 lec., 1.5 lab)<br />

Survey of the concepts and methods which archaeologists use to reconstruct human prehistory. Includes a history of<br />

archaeology; overview of theory in archaeological method and techniques of archaeological excavation; remote sensing,<br />

surveying, and mapping; dating methods; archaeological analysis and classification; interpretation of archaeological data;<br />

and the role of archaeology in cultural heritage protection and management. Also includes using museum collections,<br />

equipment, resources, and facilities of the Archaeology Centre.<br />

Prerequisite(s): ANT/ARC 101 and either 110 or 205.<br />

ANT 250 Archaeology Laboratory<br />

4 cr. hrs. 6 periods (3 lec., 3 lab)<br />

Laboratory experience in the curating, processing and analysis of artifacts recovered from archaeological sites. Includes<br />

human osteology, zooarchaeology, lithic analysis, prehistoric ceramics, shells, historic artifacts, and usage of the<br />

Archaeology Centre.<br />

Same as ARC 250.<br />

ANT/ARC 101, ARC 180, or consent of instructor is required before enrolling in this course.<br />

ANT 261 Biological Anthropology<br />

3 cr. hrs. 5 periods (2 lec., 3 lab)<br />

Interaction of human biology and culture. Includes biological anthropology as natural and social sciences, human genetics,<br />

microevolution, macroevolution, human variability, the human phenotype, health, disease, and epidemiology, demography<br />

of human populations, and population biology and genetics. Also includes using museum collections, equipment,<br />

resources, and facilities of the Archaeology Centre.<br />

ANT 265 Mapping Concepts<br />

1 cr. hrs. 1 periods (1 lec.)<br />

Introduction to the practical use of maps. Includes map basics and attributes, scales and measurements, direction,<br />

geographic coordinate systems, relief and contours, and aerial photography.<br />

ANT 267 Introduction to Geographic Information Systems<br />

3 cr. hrs. 5 periods (2 lec., 3 lab)<br />

Introduction to the technology of geographic information systems. Includes the evolution of technology, system<br />

components, database concepts, applications, and implementation.<br />

Prerequisite(s): ANT/ARC/GEO 265 or concurrent enrollment.<br />

Basic computer skills are required before enrolling in this course.<br />
