ECE 200 Foundations of Early Childhood Education<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Includes a survey of the historical and philosophical foundations of Early Childhood Education. Also includes historical and<br />

contemporary influences; pedagogy; agency management of early childhood programs; early childhood assessment; and<br />

professional responsibilities.<br />

Information: All ECE courses require college-level reading and writing.<br />

ECE 211 Inclusion of Young Children with Special Needs<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Overview of the exceptional learner (birth to age 8). Includes educational implication and service delivery, public policy,<br />

identification and assessment, specific areas of exceptionality, service plans, support systems for families, national, state<br />

and local responsibilities, early intervention, and observational records. Also includes field experience.<br />

Prerequisite(s): ECE 117.<br />

Information:<br />

This course replaced ECE 111. Either ECE 111 or ECE 211 will meet the graduation requirement.<br />

All ECE courses require college-level reading and writing.<br />

ECE 226 Teaching Techniques and Behavior Management<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Introduction to theory and application of early childhood classroom planning, guidance techniques and classroom<br />

management. Includes application of developmental theories, developmentally appropriate practices, behavior<br />

management, cultural implications, teaching practices, professional development, and self-evaluation.<br />

Information:<br />

Includes a 22-hour practicum.<br />

EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION<br />

ECE 228 The Young Child: Family, Culture, and <strong>Community</strong><br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Examination of the influences of family, culture and community on the development and learning of young children.<br />

Includes development of personal framework for understanding cultures; cultural differences in attitudes about play; age<br />

and cultural appropriateness of classroom materials; cross-cultural communication techniques; techniques for utilizing<br />

family strengths; strategies for involving families in the school and classroom; strategies for developing flexible response<br />

practices; and community project development.<br />

ECE 260 Foundations and Variations in Early Child Development<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Typical and atypical child growth and development, birth through grade 3. Includes theoretical framework; brain<br />

development and effects of experience on brain development; prenatal, perinatal, and postnatal causes of disability;<br />

variations in development; healthy development; and intervention.<br />

Prerequisite(s): ECE 117.<br />

Recommendation: Completion of ECE 211 before enrolling in this course.<br />
