FAW 103 Lifguarding<br />

1 cr. hrs. 2 periods (2 lab)<br />

Introduction to the profession of lifeguarding. Includes essential water and personal safety, life saving strokes and<br />

procedures, rescues and escapes, injury management, surveillance techniques, and preventative safety strategies.<br />

Information:<br />

Students must possess a current American Red Cross (ARC) Certification in Basic First Aid and CPR for the Professional<br />

Rescuer before enrolling in this course and must complete an American Red Cross swimming proficiency pre-test.<br />

This course follows the American Red Cross Life Guarding curriculum and successful completion leads to a three (3) year<br />

ARC certification.<br />

A program fee may be required to cover ARC certification records.<br />

May be taken three times for a maximum of three credit hours.<br />

FAW 104F1 Conditioning: For Physically Demanding Jobs<br />

1 cr. hrs. 2 periods (2 lab)<br />

Total body conditioning designed to prepare or enhance fitness required for physically demanding professions such as law<br />

enforcement, fire fighting, or the military. Includes personal safety and preparation, fitness assessments and goal setting,<br />

designing an individualized program, programmatic instruction and conditioning, and reassessment and goal setting.<br />

Information:<br />

This course is intended for individuals who are preparing for a job related physical fitness test or who have physically<br />

demanding jobs.<br />

May be taken three times for a maximum of three credit hours.<br />

FAW 104F2 Conditioning: Speed, Agility, and Quickness<br />

1 cr. hrs. 2 periods (2 lab)<br />

Total body conditioning designed to enhance sport-related fitness for athletes or fitness enthusiasts. Includes personal<br />

safety and preparation, fitness assessments and goal setting, relationship of sport to health related fitness components,<br />

designing an individualized program, programmatic instruction and conditioning, and reassessment and goal setting. Also<br />

includes focus on the development of agility, balance, coordination, power, reaction time, and speed in sports or activities<br />

requiring these skills.<br />

Information:<br />

May be taken three times for a maximum of three credit hours.<br />

This course is intended for individuals who have been participating in regular conditioning or sport activities.<br />

Offered: Fall, Spring.<br />

FAW 106F1 Individual Fitness: Bicycling<br />

1 cr. hrs. 2 periods (2 lab)<br />

Cardiovascular conditioning, improved fitness, and weight management through various cycling workouts. Includes an<br />

introduction to cycling, components of training, heart rate zone training, bike preparation and terminology, cycling health<br />

and personal safety, designing your training program, and pacing and group riding skills. Also includes cycling techniques,<br />

cardiovascular fitness assessment, goal setting, and workout types for specific goals and distances.<br />

Information:<br />

May be taken three times for a maximum of three credit hours.<br />

All rides will be on roadways and riders must have their own bicycles; however, road or racing bicycles are not required.<br />

Information: Helmets are required.<br />

FAW 106F2 Individual Fitness: Running<br />

1 cr. hrs. 2 periods (2 lab)<br />

Cardiovascular conditioning through running and walk/run workouts intended for the beginning and intermediate runner.<br />

Includes an introduction to running, components of training, heart rate zone training, the distances, running health and<br />

safety, and designing your training program. Also includes stride technique, proper alignment, cardiovascular fitness<br />

assessment, goal setting, and workout types for specific goals and distances.<br />

Information:<br />

May be taken three times for a maximum of three credit hours.<br />

This course is suitable for students who wish to run a few miles a week to those training for distances up to a marathon.<br />

Offered: Fall, Spring.<br />

FAW 106F3 Individual Fitness: Swimming<br />

1 cr. hrs. 2 periods (2 lab)<br />

Cardiovascular conditioning through lap swimming. Includes basic stroke review, techniques of endurance swimming, and<br />

assessment and improvement of cardiovascular fitness level.<br />

Information:<br />

May be taken three times for a maximum of three credit hours.<br />

This course is not suitable for students with a fear of water or who do not have some initial swimming skill (novices).<br />
