EDU 201 Diversity in Education<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Examination of diversity: age, class, gender, race disabilities, sexual orientation, and culture effects on the K-12<br />

classroom. Exploration of diversity on education; demographic changes and effects on education; diversity and<br />

multicultural philosophies and perspectives and approaches for helping students communicate. Also, analysis of prejudice,<br />

single-group studies, multicultural education, human relations and capital. Explores children’s school achievement in light<br />

of learning and teaching styles and reconstructionist approach to classroom diversity and curriculum planning.<br />

EDU 202 Introduction to the Exceptional Learner<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Special education foundation topics including current educational practices and related educational theories: Instructional,<br />

classroom management and assessment. Cultural consideration within K-12 special education; student transitioning within<br />

the school and between school and the community. Also, role and function of the special education teacher preparing for<br />

instruction, lesson plans, assessment, instruction, technology, and compliance.<br />

EDU 206 Relationships in Classroom Settings<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Introduction to basic classroom management principles including the management of curriculum, instruction, physical<br />

environment, psychosocial factors, student motivation and special groups. Also includes a focus on disruptive behavior,<br />

family involvement, communication, stress management, and appropriate record keeping.<br />

EDU 211 Meeting the Needs of Gifted Students<br />

1-3 cr. hrs. 1-3 periods (1-3 lec.)<br />

Introduction to the methods and strategies required when teaching and working with gifted students. Includes all aspects<br />

of identification, and classroom placement, acceleration, independent study, problem-solving, and participation in<br />

academic competitions.<br />

EDU 240 Adolescent Development<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Examination of early to young adult adolescent development; investigation of developmental theories and methods; and<br />

comprehensive analysis of problems encountered by today’s youth. Topic focus includes the physical, cognitive, moral and<br />

personality development; familial and peer relations, dating and sexuality, psychosocial problems: teen suicide,<br />

delinquency, and substance abuse. Also, includes ethnic and cultural considerations in addition to educational and<br />

vocational issues.<br />

This class requires a 10-hour practicum. Meets Middle School Endorsement and Coaching Certificate requirements in<br />

conjunction with other coursework.<br />

EDU 241 Middle School Curriculum and Instruction<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Concepts, skills and research techniques for middle school teachers. Examination of constructivism, research, curriculum<br />

development and instruction, unit planning, assessment and evaluation, materials selection, teaching strategies, diversity,<br />

motivation and classroom management.<br />

This class requires a 10 hour practicum. Meets Middle School Endorsement requirements in conjunction with other<br />

coursework.<br />

EDU 242 Middle School Practicum<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Strategies and tools for middle school teaching; subject matter instruction methods; adolescent development and<br />

learning; diversity of learners and instruction; creating a positive learning environment; instruction planning and<br />

implementation; assessment; professionalism; and personal reflection.<br />

Education department approval is required before enrolling in this course.<br />

This course requires a 30-hour middle school practicum placement.<br />

Meets Middle School Endorsement requirements in conjunction with other coursework.<br />

May be taken for Professional Development purposes.<br />
