Introduction to the terminology, technology, and concepts related to the sky. Includes the celestial sphere, observation,<br />

and recent advances in amateur astronomy.<br />

AST 101 Solar System<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Introduction to the science of the nature and origin of the solar system: the sun and its family of planets, along with<br />

comets and asteroids. Includes the history of astronomy and special topics regarding the space program. Also includes<br />

scientific thinking as an application of critical and quantitative thinking and science in contrast of pseudoscience.<br />

Corequisite(s): AST 101LB<br />

AST 101IN Solar System<br />

4 cr. hrs. 6 periods (3 lec., 3 lab)<br />

Introduction to the science of the nature and origin of the solar system: the sun and its family of planets, along with<br />

comets and asteroids. Includes the history of astronomy and special topics regarding the space program. Also includes<br />

scientific thinking as an application of critical and quantitative thinking, and science in contrast to pseudoscience. Also<br />

includes in-class measuremental and mathematical exercises, outside observation projects, independent studies, and selfinitiated<br />

trips to local astronomy facilities.<br />

Information: IN is the integrated version of the course with the lecture and lab taught simultaneously.<br />

Laboratory for AST 101. Includes in-class measuremental and mathematical exercises, outside observation projects,<br />

independent studies, and self-initiated field trips to local astronomy facilities. Emphasizes hands-on group and individual<br />

experiences and mathematical reasoning to enrich understanding of AST 101 lecture material.<br />

Introduction to the universe beyond the solar system. Includes the nature of light, how astronomers and telescopes work,<br />

and black holes, and the origin, nature and future of the universe. Also includes scientific thinking as an application of<br />
