GIS 181 Global Positioning Systems Basics<br />

Introduction to the use of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) receivers in a field setting for non-technical applications.<br />

Includes GPS vocabulary, operation, field data collection and data transfer. Also includes using equipment, resources and<br />

facilities of the Archaeology Centre.<br />

GIS 265 Mapping Concepts<br />

1 cr. hrs. 1 periods (1 lec.)<br />

Introduction to the practical use of maps. Includes map basics and attributes, scales and measurements, direction,<br />

geographic coordinate systems, relief and contours, and aerial photography.<br />

GIS 267 Introduction to Geographic Information Systems<br />

3 cr. hrs. 5 periods (2 lec., 3 lab)<br />

Introduction to the technology of geographic information systems. Includes the evolution of the technology, system<br />

components, database concepts, applications and implementation.<br />

Prerequisite(s): ANT/ARC/GEO 265 or concurrent enrollment.<br />

GIS 281 Global Positioning Systems<br />

1 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lab)<br />

Introduction to the technical use of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) receivers in a field setting. Includes review of GPS<br />

vocabulary and concepts, comprehensive initialization of handheld GPS receivers, data collection with handheld GPS, the<br />

use of mapping software with data from handheld GPS, concepts of differential GPS, operation of and field data collection<br />

with static and RTK precision GPS, use of software packages for differential correction and map production. Also includes<br />

using equipment, resources and facilities of the Archaeology Centre.<br />

GIS 284 Computer Cartography and CAD<br />

3 cr. hrs. 5 periods (2 lec., 3 lab)<br />

Cartographic techniques and hardware for computer generation of maps. Includes an introduction, methods and<br />

techniques, and application projects.<br />

Prerequisite(s): ANT/ARC/GEO/GIS 265 or concurrent enrollment, and CSA 101.<br />
