FITNESS AND SPORT SCIENCES<br />

FSS 243A Teaching Physical Activities: Principles<br />

2 cr. hrs. 2 periods (2 lec.)<br />

Overview of the historical development, the philosophical foundation, and the socio-cultural forces that shape and<br />

influence the teaching of physical education. Includes historical perspectives, secular trends and the impact on physical<br />

education programs, federal legislation and implications, national standards, and legal issues.<br />

Prerequisite(s): FSS 243B or concurrent enrollment and FSS 279 or concurrent enrollment.<br />

Recommendation: Student assessment score at the level to enroll in WRT 101 or higher is strongly recommended.<br />

Information: FSS 243A and 243B together constitute FSS 243.<br />

Offered: May not be offered this year, check class schedule.<br />

FSS 243B Teaching Physical Activities: Observation<br />

1 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lab)<br />

The practical application, on an individual basis, of previously studied theory and the collection of data for future<br />

theoretical interpretation. Includes weekly observation journal, quality program report, weekly online discussions, and<br />

professional behavior and dress code standards in a public school.<br />

Prerequisite(s): FSS 243A or concurrent enrollment and FSS 279 or concurrent enrollment.<br />

Recommendation: Student assessment scores at the level to enroll in WRT 101 or higher is strongly recommended<br />

before enrolling in this course.<br />

Information:<br />

FSS 243A and 243B together constitute FSS 243.<br />

This course is intended for physical education majors or current educators interested in continuing education.<br />

Students will be expected to comply with security measures in place at the local schools included in the observation<br />

during the time of enrollment. This may include fingerprinting and wearing identification badges.<br />

FSS 260 Business Practices for the Personal Trainer<br />

1 cr. hrs. 1 periods (1 lec.)<br />

Practices associated with creating and managing a personal training business. Includes how to develop a business plan,<br />

marketing services, and legal and professional responsibilities.<br />

Information:<br />

To be successful in this course, the student should have basic writing skills equivalent to the completion of WRT 100<br />

or 106.<br />

This course is intended for the Fitness Professional program and continuing education for fitness professionals, coaches,<br />

and physical education teachers.<br />

Offered: Spring.<br />

FSS 262 Personal Trainer: Special Populations<br />

1 cr. hrs. 1 periods (1 lec.)<br />

Exercise management for persons with chronic diseases. Includes medical model health appraisal, allied health profession<br />

referrals, and chronic disease and disabilities.<br />

Recommendation: It is highly recommended that students who are not currently certified as personal trainers should<br />

be in the second or later semester of the certificate program before enrolling in this course.<br />

Information: This course is intended for students in the Fitness Professional Certificate program or for current physical<br />

education teachers or healthcare providers for continuing education credit.<br />

Offered: Spring.<br />

FSS 270 Advanced Principles for Athletic Conditioning<br />

1 cr. hrs. 1 periods (1 lec.)<br />

Advanced theory and application of resistance training principles. Includes safety and personal health issues, strength and<br />

conditioning principles, testing and evaluation exercise techniques, and program design.<br />

Recommendation: Completion of FSS 218 and 276 before enrolling in this course.<br />

Information:<br />

May be taken three times for a maximum of three credit hours.<br />

This course is intended for the Fitness Professional program and continuing education for fitness professionals, coaches,<br />

and physical education teachers.<br />

FSS 271 Sport Psychology<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Development of the basics of sport psychology. Includes psychological perspective, psychology skills for coaches,<br />

psychological skills for athletes, and implementing skills training.<br />

Information:<br />

This course is intended for the Coaching program and continuing education for fitness professionals, coaches, and<br />

physical education teachers.<br />

To be successful in this course, the student should have basic writing skills equivalent to the completion of WRT 100<br />

or 106.<br />
