SSE 224 Substance Use/Abuse Among Diverse/Special Needs Populations<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Examination and focus on understanding racial and ethnic differences in the prevalence of substance abuse. Includes<br />

cultural and substance use and abuse, ethnic and racial groups, profiles of special populations, differences, cultural<br />

elements and relationships, dynamic factors, common terminology, counseling, and counseling theories.<br />

Recommendation: Completion of SSE 121 is recommended before enrolling in this course.<br />

SSE 242 Crisis Intervention, Theory and Techniques<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Principles and practice of crisis intervention. Includes theories of crisis intervention and prevention, dynamics of a crisis<br />

situation, families and individuals in crisis, self-awareness, communication, and relationship building, and responding to<br />

anxiety-provoking situations. Also includes techniques of crisis intervention, role playing in various crisis situations, grief<br />

and grief resolution techniques, and community resources and referral methods.<br />

Prerequisite(s): SSE 285.<br />

Information: Prerequisite maybe waived with consent of instructor.<br />

SSE 260 Youth Services: Policy, Practice and Prevention<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Principles and techniques of working with youth. Includes an examination of national, state and local policies which impact<br />

youth services, effective prevention strategies and how to implement them within the community, and practice skills<br />

necessary for working in a variety of youth service settings.<br />

Prerequisite(s): SSE 160.<br />

SSE 281 Social Service Delivery Systems<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Study of the social service delivery system. Includes the profession of social work, social work roles, service delivery<br />

systems, special and diverse populations, and diversity issues related to service delivery.<br />

Prerequisite(s): SSE 110.<br />

Information: Requires 40 hours of classroom-mediated community agency contact.<br />

SSE 285 Foundations of Social Work Practice<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Theoretical foundation and skill base for effective culturally competent communication and interviewing with individuals,<br />

families, small groups, and larger systems. Includes framework for multicultural understanding and social work practice,<br />

interpersonal communication in professional helping relationships, major helping and developmental theories, and<br />

personal and professional development.<br />

Prerequisite(s): SSE 281 or concurrent enrollment.<br />

SSE 289 Topics in <strong>Community</strong> Involvement<br />

1-6 cr. hrs. 1-6 periods (1-6 lec.)<br />

Direct, constructive student involvement in community problems. Includes social change and community service, action<br />

planning, change strategies, mobilizing personal power, team membership, causes of community problems, evaluation<br />

procedures, formal and informal community resources, geographic and functional communities, and roles of change<br />

agents and community service agents.<br />

Information:<br />

Students employed or working as volunteers with agencies or groups may get credit for those activities under this course.<br />

Same as SOC 289.<br />

May be taken two times for a maximum of six credit hours.<br />

SSE 290 Youth Services Field Experience<br />

4 cr. hrs. 16 periods (1 lec., 15 lab)<br />

Supervised placement in community youth serving agencies. Includes completion of written assignments, regular<br />

supervision service with agency supervisors, assistance with resume writing, orientation to agencies in the community,<br />

and evaluation of student performance.<br />

Prerequisite(s): SSE 160, 285.<br />

Recommendation: Consult instructor for alternative prerequisites.<br />

Information:<br />

May be taken two times for a maximum of eight credit hours.<br />

Consent of instructor is required before enrolling in this course.<br />

Students complete 225 clock hours of direct service at a youth serving organization during the semester.<br />
