PAR 104 Paralegal Ethics<br />

Rules and principles of professional responsibility in the legal field. Includes sources of the rules of legal ethics, ethical<br />

guidelines and attorney supervision of paralegals, unauthorized practice of law, confidentiality, conflicts of interest,<br />

advertising and solicitation, attorney’s fees and fiduciary duties, competence, malpractice, ethical conduct issues in<br />

litigation, and professional integrity issues.<br />

Prerequisite(s): PAR 103 or concurrent enrollment.<br />

Information: Prerequisite may be waived if employed in a legal-related field, or if pursing a post-degree certificate; see a<br />

PAR advisor or course instructor.<br />

PAR 106 Civil and Criminal Evidence<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Paralegal’s role in the analysis and application of the rules of evidence. Includes relevancy and its limits, privileges, use,<br />

impeachment, and exclusion of witness, opinion and expert testimony, hearsay, authentication, and contents of writings,<br />

recordings, and photographs.<br />

PAR 202 Civil Litigation Procedures II<br />

Continuation of PAR 102. Includes discovery/disclosure procedures in Federal Court and in Arizona Superior Court, file<br />

organization and document control, pre-trial motions, gathering and organizing evidence, preparation of witnesses,<br />

alternative dispute resolutions, trial, post-trial and appellate procedures.<br />

Prerequisite(s): PAR 102.<br />

PAR 203 Tort Law Procedures<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Concepts and procedures used in tort law cases. Includes tort litigation procedures and tort case law in the areas of<br />

negligence, professional negligence, strict liability, product liability, liability issues, and insurance coverage. Also includes<br />

interviewing and investigation techniques for the paralegal in tort cases.<br />

Prerequisite(s): PAR 101 and 102.<br />

PAR 204 Wills, Trusts, and Estates<br />

Concepts and procedures of wills, trusts and estate planning for paralegals. Includes Arizona statutes and rules, probate<br />

and non-probate property, testate or intestate succession, will drafting and execution, will-related documents and advance<br />

directives, trusts, estate administration and related legal actions.<br />

PAR 206 Criminal Law and Procedures I<br />

criminal law process, pretrial investigation and discovery, criminal and constitutional law cases, criminal statutes, and<br />

pretrial motion practice.<br />
