EDU 254 Literacy Development in the Primary Grades/Practicum<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Philosophy, information and strategies for literacy development in the primary classrooms. Topics include: literacy and<br />

language development theories; observation and assessment; family literacy; strategies for teaching and motivation and<br />

management.<br />

Information:<br />

Education department approval is required before enrolling in this course.<br />

This class requires a 10-hour practicum. Meets Reading Endorsement requirements in conjunction with other coursework.<br />

May be taken for Professional Development purposes.<br />

EDU 255 Content Area Reading Middle and Secondary Schools/Practicum<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Information and strategies in content area literacy and its fundamental role in instruction across the curriculum. Topics<br />

include: overview of content area literacy; active learning in the reading and writing process; comprehension, vocabulary,<br />

and study skill strategies; the role of literature in the content areas; writing as a tool for content area comprehension;<br />

assessment strategies and technology.<br />

EDU 256 Literacy Development in the Middle School/Practicum<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Research and information strategies related to teaching reading and language arts at the middle school level. Topics<br />

include: reading research; reading strategies; work with and support struggling readers; motivation; readers’ workshop;<br />

assessment; age-appropriate materials selection; and development and implementation of strategic reading groups.<br />

Education department approval is required before enrolling in this course.<br />

This class requires a 10-hour practicum. Meets Reading Endorsement requirements in conjunction with other coursework.<br />

May be taken for Professional Development purposes.<br />

EDU 257 Special Topics: Children’s Literature and Literacy/Practicum<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Strategies for using children’s literature to support literacy development. Topics include: literature selection criteria, genre,<br />

response strategies, literature assessment, elements and styles of literature and poetry, ethnic and gender issues in<br />

children’s literature, thematic unit building, response assessment, using children’s literature to teach writing, and benefits<br />

of literature and response in the classroom.<br />

EDU 260 Developing Reading, Instruction, Assessment, and Remediation<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Concepts, techniques and skills to teach struggling readers. Includes the components of reading. Includes the application<br />

of concepts to conduct assessments, instructional and remedial activities for struggling readers. Includes how to<br />

participate in the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process to help develop long-range individualized instructional<br />

plans and create short-range goals and objectives considering an individual student’s abilities, needs and learning<br />

environment.<br />

Same as EDS 260.<br />

Admission to the Post-Degree Teacher Certification Program or Education department permission is required before<br />

enrolling in this course.<br />

Requires a paid subscription to TaskStream electronic portfolio. Additional fees apply.<br />

This class requires a 15-hour practicum.<br />

EDU 268 Issues in Education<br />

1 cr. hrs. 1 periods (1 lec.)<br />

Special topics in education with an emphasis on current issues. Includes issues and concepts relating to the National Board<br />

for Professional Teaching, standards, and future teaching practices. Also includes student learning, personal motivation,<br />

lesson plan development, behavior and ethics, and professional portfolio.<br />

Information: Admission to the Post-Degree Teacher Certification Program or Education Department approval is required<br />

before enrolling in this course.<br />
