ECE 110B Communication and Langauge: Early Literacy for Children - Module B<br />

2 cr. hrs. 2 periods (2 lec.)<br />

Study of oral and written language acquisition and emergent literacy. Includes examination of emergent literacy<br />

acquisition and the developmental theories of language, development of language-rich environments that include 2nd<br />

language acquisition, developmentally appropriate children’s literature, and involving families and community in children’s<br />

literacy development.<br />

Information:<br />

ECE 110A and 110B together replace CDA 141 and 225.<br />

ECE 110A and 110B together constitute ECE 110.<br />

All ECE courses require college-level reading and writing.<br />

ECE 112 Music and Art for Children<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Survey of principles, materials, techniques, and resources for teaching music/art to children. Includes selection of<br />

appropriate materials and activities, integration with basic child development ages/stages, creating the appropriate<br />

environment, integration with other subject areas, and role of the teacher.<br />

Information:<br />

This course replaces CDA 201, 202, and 203.<br />

ECE 112A and 112B together constitute ECE 112.<br />

ECE 112A Music and Art for Children: Module A<br />

1 cr. hrs. 1 periods (1 lec.)<br />

Survey of music and art for children. Includes selection of a variety of musical works from various cultures and artists,<br />

creation of a developmentally appropriate environment, integration of music activities into other curriculum areas, and<br />

examination of the role of the teacher in early education music programs.<br />

Information:<br />

This course replaces CDA 201.<br />

ECE 112A and 112B together constitute ECE 112.<br />

ECE 112B Music and Art for Children: Module B<br />

2 cr. hrs. 2 periods (2 lec.)<br />

Survey of art and creative media for children. Includes selecting a variety of art and creative media from various cultures,<br />

the relation of the developing creativity of children to the whole child, the importance of the integration of art and creative<br />

media activities into various curricula areas, and the role of the teacher in creating a developmentally appropriate<br />

environment for young children.<br />

This course replaces CDA 202 and 203.<br />

ECE 114 Effective Parenthood<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Identification and discussion of determinants of positive child rearing practices. Includes genetic factors, parental factors,<br />

healthy and safe environments, parental practices, communication, guidance, problem-solving, discipline techniques,<br />

challenges of parenting, and community resources.<br />

Prerequisite(s): ECE 117.<br />

Information: All ECE courses require college-level reading and writing.<br />

ECE 115 Supervision and Administration of Early Childhood Programs<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Analysis of elements for planning, implementing, maintaining, and evaluating early childhood education programs.<br />

Includes program assessment, philosophy and mission statements, basic business operations, ethics, engaging<br />

stakeholders, regulating agencies, and child advocacy.<br />

Prerequisite(s): MAT 082.<br />
