Basic concepts and substance of comparing political systems. Includes methods of comparative political analysis, politics<br />

the socio-cultural environment, public authority, and political power, individuals, cultural diversity, and state, political<br />

institutions, governmental institutions, and political change.<br />

POS 210 National and State Constitutions<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Principles and procedures of national and state constitutions. Includes major principles of American and Arizona<br />

Constitutionalism, historical and legal environments of the United States and Arizona constitutions, structures, powers,<br />

and responsibilities of United States government, structures of Arizona government, civil liberties and civil rights in the<br />

United States, and constitutional change.<br />

Information: POS 210 satisfies the requirement for teacher certification as does the combination of both POS 201 and 231.<br />

POS 214 Arizona Constitution<br />

Fundamental principles of the Arizona Constitution of 1910. Includes importance of state constitutions, legislative branch<br />

and direct democracy, Arizona plural executive, judicial branch, and local governments in Arizona.<br />

Information: This course fulfills the Arizona teacher certification requirement for state constitutions.<br />

POS 231 American State and Local Governments and Politics SUN# POS 1130<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Basic concepts and substance of American state and local politics and government. Includes methods of political analysis,<br />

federalism/intergovernmental relations, cultural environment of state and local politics, impact of class, gender, age and<br />

occupation, public opinion and fundamental values. Also includes interest articulation and aggregation, institutions and<br />

processes of state and local governments, tribal governments, and state and local policy-making.<br />

Information: The combination of both POS 201 and 231 satisfies the requirements for teacher certification, as does POS 210.<br />

POS 232 The Politics and History of Immigration<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Examines the politics of immigration in the United States and the phenomenon of emigration in a global context. Includes<br />

analyses of the history of immigration as a result of the country’s political economy and its evolution and the role of<br />

immigration in the socio-political and economic development of the nation.<br />

POS 240 Understanding Terrorism<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Analysis of terrorism as an international phenomenon. Includes terrorism definitions and perspective, classifications of<br />

terrorism, cultural and geographical issues, responses by governments to terrorism, terrorism’s future impact on the<br />

international and domestic scene, and current government reports on terrorism.<br />

POS 290 Political Science Internship<br />

3 cr. hrs. 15 periods (15 lab)<br />

Supervised internship in a local governmental office. Includes placement with elected officials or candidates for public<br />

office, governmental agencies, and city, county or state departments. Also includes substantive assignments involving<br />

development and application of analytical, research and writing skills.<br />

Prerequisite(s): WRT 101.<br />

Information:<br />

Completion of six credit hours of Political Science are required before enrolling in this course.<br />

May be taken three times for a maximum of nine credit hours.<br />
