TMA 101 Introduction to Massage Therapy<br />

Survey of massage therapy practice including history, overview of bodywork systems, benefits and indications of massage,<br />

and legal requirements of practice in Arizona.<br />

Prerequisite(s): WRT 100 with a C or better or the required score on the Writing assessment test.<br />

TMA 120 Professionalism and Ethics for Massage Therapists<br />

2 cr. hrs. 2 periods (2 lec.)<br />

Overview of the ethics and professionalism related to an effective, successful massage therapy/bodywork practice.<br />

Includes general ethical principles of practice and professional dress, conduct, boundaries and communication.<br />

Offered: Fall, Spring.<br />

TMA 122 Business Management for Massage and Bodywork Practitioners<br />

2 cr. hrs. 2 periods (2 lec.)<br />

Business management course designed specifically for massage therapy and bodywork practitioners. Includes business<br />

planning and development, financial management, marketing, and communications for these professional practices.<br />

Recommendation: Concurrent enrollment in TMA 290.<br />

TMA 125 Business, Ethics and Professionalism for Massage Therapy<br />

4 cr. hrs. 4 periods (4 lec.)<br />

Overview of business, ethics, and professionalism related to an effective, successful massage therapy and bodywork<br />

practice. Includes business start up and development, business plan, financial management, marketing, and<br />

communications. Also includes general ethical principles of practice, professional dress and conduct, boundaries, and<br />

ethical business practices.<br />

Prerequisite(s): WRT 100 with a grade of C or better, or required score on the Writing assessment test.<br />

THERAPEUTIC MASSAGE<br />

TMA 201IN Therapeutic Massage Practices I<br />

6 cr. hrs. 9 periods (3 lec., 6 lab)<br />

Principles of professionalism, ethics, and legalities. Includes use of terminology related to massage therapy. Applications,<br />

indications, and contraindications of the nine strokes of Swedish massage. Study of the human osseous and muscular<br />

structure. Emphasis on normal movement patterns, origins, insertions, and functions of the muscular system.<br />

Prerequisite(s): BIO 160, PSY 101, TMA 101, TMA 120, WED 110, and WED 111 with a grade of C or better, and<br />

WRT 101 with a grade of C or better or required score on the Writing assessment test.<br />

Information: IN is the integrated version of the course with the lecture and lab taught simultaneously.<br />

TMA 202IN Therapeutic Massage Practices II<br />

6 cr. hrs. 9 periods (3 lec., 6 lab)<br />

Refined application of the nine strokes of Swedish massage and contraindications to avoid. Application of advanced<br />

principles and techniques of trigger point therapy, muscle energy technique, stretching, hydrotherapy protocols, hot and<br />

cold applications, reflexology, and corporate massage. Study of the human osseous and muscular structure. Emphasis on<br />

normal movement patterns and the origin, insertion, and function of the muscular system.<br />

Prerequisite(s): TMA 201IN with a grade of C or better.<br />

IN is the integrated version of the course with the lab and lecture taught simultaneously.<br />

TMA 202LC Therapeutic Massage Practice Clinical Lab I<br />

1 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lab)<br />

Students practice and perfect the application of fundamental Swedish Massage techniques in a supervised, supportive<br />

learning environment in an on-site clinical setting. Course reinforces massage theory and practice learned in TMA 201.<br />

Prerequisite(s): Requires concurrent registration with TMA 202.<br />
