SURFACE MINING TECHNOLOGY<br />

SMT 190 Surface Mining Technology Internship I<br />

2 cr. hrs. 10 periods (10 lab)<br />

Supervised field experience in a surface mine. Includes discussion and application of concepts relevant to the surface<br />

mining technology field. Also includes individualized internship placement to develop personal professional skills in either<br />

diesel technology, electrical technology or industrial plan technology.<br />

This course requires admission to the SMT program before enrolling.<br />

Requires students to meet with the instructor and on-site supervisor.<br />

SMT 191 Surface Mining Technology Internship II<br />

2 cr. hrs. 10 periods (10 lab)<br />

Supervised field experience with a participating surface mine to expand career interests and apply subject knowledge<br />

relevant to the surface mining technology field. Includes individualized internship placement to develop personal and<br />

professional skill in either diesel technology, electrical technology or industrial plan technology.<br />

SMT 205 Blueprint Interpretation for Surface Mining<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Interpretation of construction documents and drawings. Includes basic drafting and blueprint reading skills and their<br />

application to construction, and component, basic electrical, and basic welding print reading for surface mining. Also<br />

includes development of the learner?s visualization and plan interpretation skills with respect to specific concepts.<br />

SMT 210 Heating and Air Conditioning for Mining Vehicle<br />

3 cr. hrs. 4 periods (2 lec., 2 lab)<br />

Diagnosis and repair of heavy equipment heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Includes personal<br />

and environmental safety, system components, system diagnosis and repair. Also includes refrigerant recovery, recycling<br />

and handling.<br />

SMT 220 Mining Equipment Drivetrain<br />

3 cr. hrs. 4 periods (2 lec., 2 lab)<br />

Procedures and techniques to service and repair mining equipment, manual and automatic transmissions, and the drivetrain.<br />

Includes theory, diagnosis, and service of clutches, driveline, synchro transmissions and final drives, torque<br />

converters, and automatic transmission. Also includes proper repair and service of assemblies for standard and automatic<br />

transmissions.<br />

SMT 260 Motors and Motor Control for Mining<br />

3 cr. hrs. 4 periods (2 lec., 2 lab)<br />

Theory, diagnosis and the repair of various motors used in surface mining and operation of heavy mining equipment.<br />

Includes construction and operation of single phase and three phase induction motors, run capacitors, start capacitors,<br />

contactors, motor starters, relays, and over current protection devices. Also includes diagnostic, installation and service<br />

techniques.<br />

Prerequisite(s): SMT 150 and 152, or permission of department.<br />

SMT 261 Programmable Logic Controllers<br />

3 cr. hrs. 4 periods (2 lec., 2 lab)<br />

Concepts and techniques to use programmable logic controls. Includes control systems, modes, inputs and outputs and<br />

final control elements. Also includes mining equipment applications.<br />
