SSE 292 Social Services Field Experience<br />

4 cr. hrs. 16 periods (1 lec., 15 lab)<br />

Supervised placement in community social services agencies. Includes completion of written assignments, regular<br />

supervision service with agency supervisors, assistance with resume writing, orientation to agencies in the community,<br />

and evaluation of student performance.<br />

Prerequisite(s): SSE 285.<br />

Recommendation: Consult instructor for alternative prerequisites.<br />

Information:<br />

May be taken two times for a maximum of eight credit hours.<br />

Consent of instructor is required before enrolling in this course.<br />

Students complete 225 clock hours of direct service at a social service organization during the semester.<br />

Offered: Fall, Spring.<br />

SSE 293 <strong>Community</strong> Health and Development Field Experience<br />

4 cr. hrs. 16-26 periods (1 lec., 15 lab)<br />

<strong>Community</strong> health and development skills practiced and evaluated in community-based health, human service, education<br />

and community agencies and settings. Includes supervised placement in an appropriate social service agency or<br />

organization, supervisory services and site visits, orientation to community agencies and organizations, field experience<br />

evaluation, and classroom seminars.<br />

Prerequisite(s): SSE 170.<br />

Information: Students complete 225 clock hours of direct service at a community health and development organization<br />

during the semester.<br />

SSE 296 Independent Study in Social Services<br />

1-3 cr. hrs. 3-9 periods (3-9 lab)<br />

Advanced projects, research and learning in the social services. Content to be determined by conference between student<br />

and instructor.<br />

Introduction to the basic concepts of sociology, sociological analysis and research. Includes social structure, status, social<br />

group, social control, social stratification, social class, gender, race, sexuality, ethnicity, aging, learning and physical<br />

challenges, family, religion, education, government, health, technology, corporations, terrorism, environmental<br />

sustainability, social movements and social change, mass society, and postmodernity. Also includes globalization within<br />

and across contemporary societies and cultures.<br />

SOC 109 Introduction to Global Studies<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Survey of modern globalization. Includes the study of dimensions of globalization, global organizations, global politics,<br />

cultural globalization, the global economy, global environmental independence, and global social movements and counter<br />

movements. Also includes global interactions and their current effects on the restructuring of cultural, political, and<br />

economic institutions worldwide.<br />

Introduction to the study of the urban environment. Includes exploring the city, city form and city culture, urban diversity,<br />

and urban and global dilemmas and possible solutions. Also includes a special emphasis on understanding cities and the<br />

impact of globalization at community, national, and international levels.<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Analysis of the causes, effects, and solutions to current social problems. Includes the causes, effects, and the complexity<br />

of solutions to current social problems in behavioral variance, inequality, social institutions, and global issues.<br />

Recommendation: Completion of SOC 101 before enrolling in this course.<br />
