MDA 122 Medical Assistant Clinical Care<br />

2 cr. hrs. 3 periods (1 lec., 2 lab)<br />

Multi-skilled approach to patient care. Includes legal and ethical responsibility, asepsis, dressing changes,<br />

electrocardiograms, phlebotomy, specimen collection and handling, urinalysis, whole blood hematology, glucose<br />

monitoring, cholesterol and coagulation testing. Includes compliance with Occupational Health and Safety Administration<br />

(OSHA) and the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations. Also includes principles of medication<br />

administration with an emphasis on oral and parenteral routes of drug administration.<br />

Principles and procedures for the medical assistant. Includes methods of assisting clinicians with physical examinations,<br />

procedures, treatments, and minor surgical procedures in the medical office. Also includes collection of vital signs, height<br />

and weight, patient data, and appropriate documentation.<br />

MDA 124 Medical Terminology for Health Care Workers<br />

2 cr. hrs. 2 periods (2 lec.)<br />

Medical terminology used in health care, with special care populations and in special services. Includes body systems<br />

approach to terms related to structures, functions, diseases, procedures, and diagnostic tests. Includes building and<br />

analyzing terms using word parts. Also includes medical abbreviations and symbols and term spelling.<br />

MDA 125 Orientation to ICD-9 Coding<br />

3 cr. hrs. 4 periods (2 lec., 2 lab)<br />

Orientation to the International Classification of Diseases - 9th Edition (ICD-9) coding classification system. Includes<br />

terminology, principles and components of the ICD-9 coding system, codes for diseases and conditions, information from<br />

health records, and coding for highest specificity.<br />

Recommendation: MDA 121 and 124, and minimum 25 words per minute word processing skills.<br />

MDA 126 Medical Billing and Insurance for Medical Assistants<br />

Application of insurance, coding and billing. Includes legal and ethical issues, federal, state and private insurance claims,<br />

procedural and diagnostic coding, and banking and accounting principles.<br />

Recommendation: Minimum 25 words per minute word processing skills.<br />

includes an overview of medical assistant as an office manager.<br />
