LAW ENFORCEMENT ACADEMY<br />

LEA 104 LEA Law and Legal Matters I<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Examination of the basic concepts, phrases and definitions needed to study criminal law. Includes an analysis of<br />

constitutional requirements, statutes and case law on search and seizure, the conditions under which an officer or citizen<br />

may make an arrest, an officer’s duties and responsibilities prior to and during the arrest, and the rules of evidence. Also<br />

includes summonses and subpoenas, civil processes, and the functions of the various courts, agencies, and laws relating<br />

to juveniles.<br />

Admission to the Law Enforcement Academy or consent of the Law Enforcement Coordinator is required before enrolling<br />

in this course.<br />

LEA 105 LEA Multicultural Issues<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Exploration of the value of diversity in a law enforcement environment. Includes the standards and norms of different<br />

groups and individuals and how they impact the attitudes and behaviors. Also includes the need to adapt interactions<br />

without compromising established societal norms.<br />

LEA 106 LEA <strong>Community</strong> and Police Relations<br />

2 cr. hrs. 2 periods (2 lec.)<br />

Benefits and methods of developing positive police-community relations and recognizing cultural differences within the<br />

community. Includes the emotional and behavioral indicators of crime victims, personal communication, crime prevention<br />

functions of the patrol officer and various crime prevention programs.<br />

LEA 107 LEA Interpersonal Relations in Law Enforcement<br />

Exploration of the interactions of law enforcement professionals with peers and the public. Includes the unique roles and<br />

expectations which occur when entering a law enforcement career. Also includes specific methods and techniques used in a<br />

situational interactions.<br />

LEA 200 Law Enforcement Academy (LEA) Phase II<br />

16 cr. hrs. 16 periods (16 lec.)<br />

Continuation of LEA 101. Includes the law and legal matters, patrol procedures, traffic enforcement and investigation,<br />

criminal investigation, and records and reports. Also includes standards required of law enforcement personnel and the<br />

functions and responsibilities of the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (Az POST).<br />

Prerequisite(s): LEA 101, or LEA 102, 103, 104, 105, 106, and 107.<br />

in this course.<br />

LEA 201, 202, 203, 204, and 205 together constitute LEA 200.<br />

LEA 201 LEA Law and Legal Matters II<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Continuation of LEA 104. Includes the proper techniques for giving effective police testimony, outline of the United States<br />

Constitution, Arizona Revised Statutes (ARS) Title 13, and a review of common civil and criminal liability facing law<br />

enforcement agencies and officers.<br />

Prerequisite(s): LEA 101, or LEA 102, 103, 104, 105, 106, and 107.<br />
