REA 068 Techniques of Vocabulary<br />

2 cr. hrs. 2 periods (2 lec.)<br />

Introduction to basic strategies for vocabulary development. Includes use of context clues, word parts, the dictionary,<br />

word cards, imaging techniques and vocabulary resources.<br />

Information: May be taken four times for a maximum of eight credit hours.<br />

REA 071 Reading Fundamentals<br />

4 cr. hrs. 4 periods (4 lec.)<br />

Development of fundamental reading strategies. Includes extensive development of word analysis, vocabulary, information<br />

literacy, and reading strategies necessary to assure successful comprehension at the literal and interpretive levels.<br />

Information: <strong>Design</strong>ed for persons who need an intensive review of the basic reading strategies.<br />

Offered: Fall, Spring, Summer.<br />

REA 075 Spelling<br />

2 cr. hrs. 2 periods (2 lec.)<br />

Development of strategies for improving spelling. Includes basics of the English spelling system and spelling rules.<br />

REA 081 Reading Improvement I<br />

4 cr. hrs. 4 periods (4 lec.)<br />

Improvement of basic reading strategies. Includes development of word analysis, vocabulary, information literacy, and<br />

reading strategies necessary to assure successful comprehension at the literal level and interpretive levels.<br />

Prerequisite(s): REA 071 with a C or better or required score on Reading assessment test.<br />

REA 091 Reading Improvement II<br />

Development of reading strategies. Includes vocabulary comprehension, study strategies, metacognition, information<br />

literacy, and community of readers.<br />

Prerequisite(s): REA 081 with a C or better required score on the Reading assessment test.<br />

Information: May be taken two times for a maximum of eight credit hours.<br />

REA 112 Critical Reading<br />

4 cr. hrs. 4 periods (4 lec.)<br />

Development of college reading strategies. Includes comprehension strategies at the college level, critical reading and<br />

thinking, information literacy, vocabulary development, and advanced study strategies.<br />

Prerequisite(s): Has both a Reading and Writing prerequisite. Reading: REA 091 with a C or better or required score on<br />

Reading assessment test. Writing: WRT 070 with a C or better or placement into WRT 100 or higher.<br />

Information: Student may be admitted with instructor recommendation.<br />

Offered: Fall, Spring, Summer.<br />

REA 112HP Critical Reading for Health Professions<br />

4 cr. hrs. 4 periods (4 lec.)<br />

Development of college reading strategies. Includes comprehension strategies at the college level, critical reading and<br />

thinking, information literacy, vocabulary development, and advanced study strategies.<br />

Prerequisite(s): Has both Reading and Writing prerequisite. Reading: Completion of REA 091 with a grade of C or<br />

better or satisfactory score on REA assessment. Writing: Completion 070 with a C or better or placement into WRT 100<br />

or higher.<br />

Recommendation: Recommended for students pursuing an associate’s degree in Nursing, Radiologic Technology,<br />

Respiratory Therapy or Dental Hygiene Education.<br />

Information: Students must obtain consent of an advisor, counselor, or reading instructor before enrolling in this course.<br />

Same as REA 112.<br />

Offered: Fall, Spring.<br />

REA 125 Speed Reading<br />

2 cr. hrs. 2 periods (2 lec.)<br />

Improvement of reading rate. Includes reading and study habits, visual perception, rate and flexibility, and<br />

comprehension.<br />

Prerequisite(s): REA 112 or required score on the Reading assessment test.<br />

Offered: May not be offered this year, check class schedule.<br />
