ARC 205 Introduction to Southwestern Prehistory<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Study of the prehistory of the American Southwest from its earliest inhabitants to European contact. Includes<br />

anthropology and its subfields, basics of archaeology, the Southwest, Paleo-Indians, Archaic people, Hohokam, Mogollon,<br />

Anasazi, and other Southwestern cultures, and late prehistoric and historic cultural change.<br />

ARC 225 Principles of Archaeology<br />

3 cr. hrs. 4 periods (2.5 lec., 1.5 lab)<br />

Survey of the concepts and methods which archaeologists use to reconstruct human prehistory. Includes a history of<br />

archaeology; overview of theory in archaeological method and techniques of archaeological excavation; remote sensing,<br />

surveying, and mapping; dating methods; archaeological analysis and classification; interpretation of archaeological data;<br />

and the role of archaeology in cultural heritage protection and management. Also includes using museum collections,<br />

equipment, resources, and facilities of the Archaeology Centre.<br />

Prerequisite(s): ARC/ANT 101 and either 110 or 205.<br />

ARC 250 Archaeology Laboratory<br />

4 cr. hrs. 6 periods (3 lec., 3 lab)<br />

Laboratory experience in the curating, processing and analysis of artifacts recovered from archaeological sites. Includes<br />

human osteology, zooarchaeology, lithic analysis, prehistoric ceramics, shells, historic artifacts, and usage of the<br />

Archaeology Centre.<br />

Prerequisite(s): ANT/ARC 101, ARC 180.<br />

ARC 261 Biological Anthropology<br />

3 cr. hrs. 5 periods (2 lec., 3 lab)<br />

Interaction of human biology and culture. Includes biological anthropology as natural and social sciences; human genetics;<br />

microevolution; macroevolution; human variability; the human phenotype; health, disease, and epidemiology;<br />

demography of human populations, and population biology and genetics. Also includes using museum collections,<br />

equipment, resources, and facilities of the Archaeology Centre.<br />

ARC 265 Mapping Concepts<br />

Introduction to the practical use of maps. Includes map basics and attributes, scales and measurements, direction,<br />

geographic coordinate systems, relief and contours, and aerial photography.<br />

ARC 267 Introduction to Geographic Information Systems<br />

3 cr. hrs. 5 periods (2 lec., 3 lab)<br />

Introduction to the technology of geographic information systems. Includes the evolution of technology, system<br />

components, database concepts, applications, and implementation.<br />

Prerequisite(s): ANT/ARC/GEO 265 or concurrent enrollment.<br />

Recommendation: Basic computer skills are required before enrolling in this course.<br />

ARC 275 Archaeological Excavation I<br />

4 cr. hrs. 8 periods (2 lec., 6 lab)<br />

Introduction to the techniques of archaeological mapping, excavation and recording. Includes field experience in southern<br />

Arizona. Also includes using museum collections, equipment, resources and facilities of the Archaeological Centre.<br />
