FSS 218 Professional Activities: Weight Training<br />

2 cr. hrs. 3 periods (1 lec., 2 lab)<br />

Introduction to the basic resistance training principles. Includes history, anatomy and physiology, biomechanics, weight<br />

training principles and concepts, program development and assessment, and programming.<br />

Prerequisite(s): FSS 234 or concurrent enrollment.<br />

Information:<br />

This course is intended for the Fitness or Physical Education majors, or those pursuing a Professional or Coaching<br />

certificate.<br />

To be successful in this course, the student should have basic writing skills equivalent to the completion of WRT 100<br />

or 106.<br />

FSS 234 Fundamentals of Exercise Science<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Overview of how the various systems of the body interact to help adapt to exercise and movement and topics are<br />

specifically designed to provide Physical Education and Fitness majors with the basic understanding of the structure and<br />

function of the human anatomy and physiology with an emphasis on direct application to their professional development.<br />

Includes the skeletal support system, muscular system structure, nervous system, metabolism, endocrine system,<br />

cardiovascular system, and the respiratory system.<br />

Prerequisite(s): REA 091, and WRT 100 or 106, or satisfactory scores on the Reading and Writing assessment tests.<br />

FSS 236 Communication and Exercise Adherence<br />

1 cr. hrs. 1 periods (1 lec.)<br />

Communication skills and interviewing techniques for personal trainers. Includes theories of motivation, the<br />

transtheoretical model and stages of change, and communication techniques.<br />

Prerequisite(s): WRT 100 or 106, or satisfactory score on the writing assessment test.<br />

Information: This course is intended for the Fitness Professional program and continuing education for fitness<br />

professionals, coaches, and physical education teachers.<br />

FSS 238 Introduction to Sports Injury Management<br />

2 cr. hrs. 2 periods (2 lec.)<br />

Introduction to principles and techniques of preventing, treating and rehabilitating sports related injuries. Includes<br />

overview of sports injury management, recognition of common sports injuries, and taping/wrapping techniques.<br />

Prerequisite(s): WRT 100 or 106, or satisfactory score on the writing assessment test.<br />

Information: To be successful in this course, the student should have basic writing skills equivalent to the completion of<br />

WRT 100 or 106.<br />

FSS 241 Nutrition for Exercise and Sport<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Examination of the relationship between nutrition and the human body. Includes optimal nutrition, energy expenditure,<br />

body composition assessment, regulating the body through exercise, and recent research findings.<br />

Prerequisite(s): MAT 086, REA 091, and WRT 100 or 106, or satisfactory score on the Mathematics, Reading and<br />

Writing assessment tests.<br />

Information: This course is intended for the Fitness Professional and professional development for coaches.<br />

Offered: Fall, Summer.<br />

FSS 243 Teaching Physical Activities<br />

3 cr. hrs. 5 periods (2 lec., 3 lab)<br />

Overview of the historical development, the philosophical foundations, and the socio-cultural forces that shape and<br />

influence the teaching of physical education. Includes historical perspectives, secular trends and the impact on physical<br />

education programs, federal legislation and implications, national standards, and legal issues. Also includes the practical<br />

application, on an individual basis, of previously studied theory and the collection of data for future theoretical<br />

interpretation. This course will expose students to observational experiences in the public school setting. It is designed to<br />

provide future physical educators with opportunities to observe locomotor skills, work with individuals and small groups of<br />

students, evaluate motor skill proficiency and be a positive role model for children.<br />

Prerequisite(s): FSS 279 or concurrent enrollment.<br />

Recommendation: Student assessment score at the level to enroll in WRT 101 or higher is strongly recommended.<br />

Information: This course is intended for physical education majors or current educators interested in continuing<br />

education. Students will be expected to comply with security measures in place at the local schools included in the<br />

observation during the time of enrollment. This may include fingerprinting and wearing identification badges.<br />

Offered: May not be offered this year, check class schedule.<br />
