TRANSLATION AND INTERPRETATION STUDIES<br />

TRS 101 Introduction to Translation and Interpretation<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Principles and procedures for acquisition of skills in interpretation and translation of written materials. Includes an<br />

introduction to translation and interpretation; translation and interpretation preparation, procedures, and specialties; and<br />

work of the translator and interpreter.<br />

TRS 102 English and Spanish for Translation<br />

4 cr. hrs. 4 periods (4 lec.)<br />

Analysis of the English and Spanish languages from the translator’s point of view. Includes the structure of English and<br />

Spanish, cultural and stylistic components, and semantics. Also includes standard English mechanics, punctuation, and<br />

metaphorical and idiomatic expressions as well as an analysis of Spanish and the dialectal differences, interferences and<br />

lexical obstacles.<br />

Prerequisite(s): SPA 254 and WRT 102.<br />

TRS 120IN Technology for Translation and Interpretation<br />

2 cr. hrs. 3 periods (1 lec., 2 lab)<br />

Survey of the technological equipment that facilitates the work of the translator. Includes computers for<br />

transcription/translation, information distribution techniques, file transfer technologies, using the World Wide Web in<br />

translation and interpretation, and applied projects.<br />

Prerequisite(s): CSA 100 and TRS 101.<br />

Information:<br />

CSA 100 may be waived if computer applications experience is documented. See an instructor.<br />

IN is the integrated version of the course with lecture and lab taught simultaneously.<br />

TRS 150 Survey of Translation Specialty Areas<br />

4 cr. hrs. 4 periods (4 lec.)<br />

Introduction to the translation specialty areas of health care, legal, literary, and commercial/business. Includes<br />

introduction to specialty areas, types of documents, elements and characteristics of specialty documents, resource<br />

development, ethical and legal restrictions, and development of translation subskills.<br />

TRS 160 Translation in Specialty Areas<br />

4 cr. hrs. 4 periods (4 lec.)<br />

Principles and procedures for translating specialty area materials. Includes health care, legal, commercial/business, and<br />

literary translation exercises.<br />

Prerequisite(s): TRS 150.<br />

TRS 161 Medical Spanish and English Interpreting<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Interpreting in a medical context. Includes interpreting in a medical setting, pronunciation of Spanish and English names<br />

and medical terms, Spanish and English medical terminology, bicultural medical communication, and regional dialects.<br />

Information: This course assumes bilingual fluency in both English and Spanish.<br />

TRS 162 Introduction to Legal Spanish/English Interpretation<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Interpreting in a legal context. Includes interpreting in a legal setting, knowledge of legal procedure and ancillary issues<br />

related to legal terminology in Spanish and English, bicultural legal communication, and regional differences.<br />

Information: Requires Spanish/English language fluency.<br />

TRS 202 Interpretation Techniques<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Specific theories and practices in interpreting oral communication from English to Spanish and Spanish to English. Includes<br />

theories of interpretation, techniques of interpretation, interpretation strategies, interpretation procedures, and modes of<br />

interpretation.<br />

Prerequisite(s): TRS 101.<br />
