Survey of Tohono O’odham culture, historical development, and modern issues. Includes development of culture and world<br />

view, sources of Tohono O’odham history, role in economic and social development of Northwestern Mexico and<br />

Southwestern United States, and contemporary Tohono O’odham issues.<br />

HIS 124 History and Culture of the Yaqui People<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Survey of the cultural heritage of the Yaqui people and the history of their struggles to protect Yaqui land and customs.<br />

Includes Yaqui origins, pre-Columbian Yaqui society, oral traditions and world view, early Spanish contacts, Catholic<br />

influences, economic development, rebellions, resistance and leadership, and policies regarding Native Americans. Also<br />

includes the deportation and enslavement of the Yaqui from the 17th to the 20th centuries by the Spanish and American<br />

governments and the deportation of the Yaqui by the United States in the 1880’s. Also examines acts of genocide and<br />

subjugation against the Yaqui in revolutionary Mexico, 20th century relocation and adaptation strategies of the Yaqui in the<br />

United States and the Yaqui culture of the 21st century.<br />

Historical survey of the Mexicano(a)/Chicano(a) peoples from their indigenous origins in Meso-America and the Gran<br />

Chichimeca to the present in the United States. Includes Chicano(a) historiography, movements north under Spain and<br />

Mexico, nineteenth century to 1880: repression and resistance, making of the Chicano(a) worker to WWII, and toward the<br />

21st century: struggles continue. Also includes the totality of Chicano(a) life since the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and<br />

challenges into the 21st century.<br />
