ART 100 Basic <strong>Design</strong><br />

3 cr. hrs. 5 periods (2 lec., 3 lab)<br />

Introduction to the elements and principles of visual design. Includes identifying and interpreting creative problems;<br />

emphasizing art and design skills; writing reviews of gallery visits/museum visits/artist lecturers; articulating and<br />

demonstrating progressive skills in their own work; participating in individual and group critiques; and relating their work<br />

on a conceptual, interpersonal and global level.<br />

ART 105 Exploring Art and Visual Studies<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Exploration of art and visual image within the context of culture. Includes selective perception, formal analysis, materials<br />

and techniques, art in a historical framework, visual culture and studies, meaning and value in art and visual culture, and<br />

high and low culture art. Also includes contemporary issues; traditional and contemporary themes in art; museums,<br />

galleries, and public spaces; and process, form, and content in making art.<br />

ART 106 Survey of Painting Materials and Techniques<br />

3 cr. hrs. 5 periods (2 lec., 3 lab)<br />

Technical and theoretical investigation of the most prominent painting methods from Ancient Greece to the present.<br />

Includes materials used in painting, the fresco and encaustic techniques, the glair technique, the egg tempera technique,<br />

the indirect and direct oil techniques, and the watercolor technique.<br />

ART 108 Mexican/Chicano Mural Painting<br />

3 cr. hrs. 5 periods (2 lec., 3 lab)<br />

Introduction to and application of the principles of Mexican mural painting. Includes historical and contemporary events<br />

that influenced the birth and development of mural art, prominent muralists in Europe, Mexico and the Untied States that<br />

influenced and define the Chicano mural movement, Chicano mural painting in the United States, research and<br />

development for student mural project, and creating a portable mural.<br />

ART 109 Watercolor Painting<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Introductory course in watercolor painting that explores basic materials, techniques, and development of students’<br />

personal style. Includes the use of washes, wet-in-wet, dry brush, color mixing, and value. Also includes design, principles<br />

of composition, space, and form.<br />

ART 110 Drawing I SUN# ART 1111<br />

3 cr. hrs. 5 periods (2 lec., 3 lab)<br />

Introduction to drawing. Includes drawing and design problems, varied use of materials and techniques, perceptual skills,<br />

critique processes with critical thinking for personal growth, analysis of professional art events or galleries, and portfolio<br />

creation.<br />

Prerequisite(s): ART 100.<br />

ART 115 Color and Composition<br />

3 cr. hrs. 5 periods (2 lec., 3 lab)<br />

Introduction to recognizing color principles and relationships and analyzing duplicating colors. Includes value scale, color<br />

wheel, intensity, color relationships, transparency, dimension, luminosity, and creative projects.<br />

Recommendation: Completion of ART 100 before enrolling in this course.<br />
