LAW ENFORCEMENT ACADEMY<br />

LEA 220 Law Enforcement Academy (LEA) Phase III<br />

16 cr. hrs. 16 periods (16 lec.)<br />

Continuation of LEA 101 and LEA 200. Concepts, techniques, and applications to develop law enforcement proficiency<br />

skills. Includes emergency medical care, legal implications, weapons, and firearms strategies, tactics, and use; the<br />

development and demonstration of each participant’s mental and physical condition; and techniques for maintaining<br />

physical control of disruptive, combative, or potentially dangerous subjects, such as restraint holds and other defensive<br />

tactics. Includes defensive driving techniques, methods, and applications. Also includes the liabilities and responsibilities<br />

associated with the use of force and factors in use of force situations. Also includes standards required of law enforcement<br />

personnel and the functions and responsibilities of the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (Az POST).<br />

Prerequisite(s): LEA 200, or LEA 201, 202, 203, 204, and 205.<br />

Admission to the Law Enforcement Academy or consent of Law Enforcement Coordinator is required before enrolling in<br />

this course.<br />

The student must achieve a minimum qualification score and demonstrate proficiency in the use and deployment of all<br />

weapons to successfully complete this course.<br />

Students must score in the fair range for all measures to complete this course.<br />

LEA 221, 222, 223, and 224 together constitute LEA 220.<br />

LEA 221 LEA Police Proficiency Skills I<br />

4 cr. hrs. 4 periods (4 lec.)<br />

Methods of first aid and stress management. Includes providing emergency medical care to victims, legal and civil issues,<br />

and proper procedures for handling various traumas. Also includes the manifestations and techniques of managing<br />

personal job-related stress.<br />

Prerequisite(s): LEA 200, or LEA 201, 202, 203, 204, and 205.<br />

Admission to the Law Enforcement Academy or consent of the Law Enforcement Coordinator is required before enrolling<br />

in this course.<br />

Students must score in the fair range for all measures to complete this course.<br />

LEA 221, 222, 223, and 224 together consitute LEA 220.<br />

LEA 222 LEA Police Proficiency Skills II<br />

4 cr. hrs. 4 periods (4 lec.)<br />

Continuation of LEA 221. Weapons and firearm safety, use, and less lethal options. Also includes the mechanical, safety<br />

features, servicing, and deployment of weapons and tactics.<br />

Prerequisite(s): LEA 221.<br />

in this course.<br />

The student must achieve a minimum qualification score and demonstrate proficiency in the use and deployment of all<br />

LEA 223 LEA Police Proficiency Skills III<br />

4 cr. hrs. 4 periods (4 lec.)<br />

Continuation of LEA 222. Includes the development and demonstration of each participant’s mental and physical condition<br />

through structured exercise and classroom education. Also includes various techniques for maintaining physical control of<br />

disruptive, combative, or potentially dangerous subjects, including restraint holds and other defensive tactics.<br />

Prerequisite(s): LEA 222.<br />

LEA 224 LEA Police Proficiency Skills IV<br />

4 cr. hrs. 4 periods (4 lec.)<br />

Continuation of LEA 223. Includes basic defensive driving techniques, hazardous road conditions, dynamics of a moving<br />

vehicle, the driving task, pursuit and high speed response procedures, high speed vehicle control, and methods to<br />

successfully stop fleeing vehicles. Also includes the liabilities and responsibilities associated with the use of force and<br />

factors in use of force situations.<br />

Prerequisite(s): LEA 223.<br />
