MUS 149 Opera Workshop<br />

2 cr. hrs. 3 periods (1 lec., 2 lab)<br />

Introduction to the techniques of opera. Includes exercise in stage movement, musical preparation, staging and<br />

memorization of scenes, performance of opera, and reevaluation and practice.<br />

Information:<br />

May be taken four times for a maximum of eight credit hours.<br />

MUS 151 Exploring Music<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Introduction to various historical musical styles. Includes elements of music, musical instruments, the Middle Ages, the<br />

Renaissance, the Baroque era, classics, and the Nineteenth and Twentieth centuries.<br />

MUS 154 Jazz Improvisation<br />

2 cr. hrs. 2 periods (2 lec.)<br />

Study of jazz improvisation on various instruments. Includes rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic aspects of jazz styles. Also<br />

includes an emphasis on progressive development of musical skills through interpretation of literature.<br />

May be taken ten times for a maximum of twenty credit hours.<br />

MUS 155 Introduction to Electronic Music I<br />

3 cr. hrs. 4 periods (2 lec., 2 lab)<br />

Introduction to producing music with Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) configurations and WAV sounds. Includes<br />

concepts in acoustics and music synthesis, use of hardware and software, music notation software, music sequencing<br />

software, and documentation of projects. Also includes computers, printers, and keyboard controller.<br />

Recommendation: Ability to read music before enrolling in this course.<br />

MUS 156 Introduction to Electronic Music II<br />

3 cr. hrs. 4 periods (2 lec., 2 lab)<br />

Continuation of MUS 155. Includes song data entry from computer synthesizer keyboards, editor/library, and percussion<br />

writing.<br />

Operation, scope, and career opportunities in the music business. Includes music in the marketplace, professional<br />

songwriting and music composition, music copyright and publishing, business affairs in the music industry, and application<br />

of information.<br />

Operation, scope, and career opportunties in the music business. Includes focus on the record industry, environmental<br />

music, uses of music in radio, telecommunications and film, and career options.<br />

MUS 160 Popular Music in America<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Study of the history of popular music culture in America through current trends in today’s society. Includes background of<br />

music, sources of music, birth of music, syncopated song and dance, jazz, crooners and jazz singers, musical theater,<br />

country music, Latin music traditions, and roots of rock and roll. Also includes impact of technology, motown and soul,<br />

rock in the seventies, and modern trends.<br />

MUS 201 History and Literature of Music I<br />

3 cr. hrs. 3 periods (3 lec.)<br />

Music history and literature from the ancient Greeks through the Baroque. Includes emphasis on specific works and<br />

composers as representative of the evolution of Western music.<br />

Prerequisite(s): MUS 125 or concurrent enrollment.<br />
