Kriuchkova «Anti-Art: Theory and Practice of Avant-Garde Movement»The fifth and sixth volumes of «Ukrainian Art History» have become theinfallible success in the research and interpretation of the problems of the sculpturalarts of the thirties. It should be remembered that the writing team workedunder the ideological pressure and it was quite an achievement that for the firsttime after the repressions the publication mentioned and even illustrated theworks of painters M. Boychenko, V. Palmov, A. Taran, P. Holubiatnykov,M. Sharonov, I. Zhdanko, D. Shavykin, Yu. Sadylenko, I. Shtilman, I. Padalka,M. Epshtein, V. Zauze, O. Pavlenko, M. Zhuk, A. Cherkasky, O. Bohomazov,M. Shekhtman, F. Krychevsky, M. Rokytsky, M. Pavliuk, A. Ivanov, K. Gvozdyk,K. Yeleva, S. Nalepinska-Boychuk, V. Tatlin, K. Malevich, O. Myzin, L. Po,Zh. Dindo, O. Arkhypenko, O. Kurylas, A. Manastyrsky, P. Selsky, O. Novakivskyas well as art critics I. Vrona, P. Horbenko, F. Ernst, Ya. Zatenatsky.Ye. Kholostenko, V. Khmury.It is important to speak of the publications printed abroad among the émigrés.Those were eyewitness recollections, articles expressing independentthoughts and real historical facts. They helped introduce the names of the painterswho had to go into exile and thus, they automatically became the enemies ofthe people. Their unique creation and active exhibition activity were widely coveredin Ukrainian journal «Notes from Art» published in Philadelphia (USA) inthe fifties. The articles of Ye. Blakytny were highly publicized in 1970–1990.The scientific researches published in the post-Soviet period (the secondhalf of 1980 up to 2003) became of extreme significance in the process of bookwriting. They included the true and deep analytics on the changes in the judgmentof the art process of the thirties pointing out the facts of forced de-structuringof the art environment and the consequences of deformation of the aestheticideas. One could also come across the analysis of the instant connectionbetween an art event and certain socio-political convulsions. The publicationson the tragic destinies of the famous creators became of much importance.Doctor V. A. Afanasyev (1921–2002) was an outstanding Ukrainian art criticwho studied the issues of the social realism in Ukraine. He depicted the path ofthe Ukrainian art in his «Ukrainian Soviet Painting» of 1962 and «Social Realismin the Ukrainian Fine Arts» of 1967.578
