A vibrant day and boarding school
At Headington School in Oxford we are proud of our
international outlook. With more than 30 nationalities
represented within our senior school, ours is a genuinely
international community. We celebrate differences in tradition
and culture and our boarding houses provide a melting pot of
influences from Europe, Africa, Asia and America.
Location
Headington School is just a short walk from Oxford city
centre with its world-famous university, museums and
‘dreaming spires’. Our students benefit from the proximity of
the university as visiting speakers frequently come to the
school from a wide range of university departments.
What we offer
As well as the high quality teaching and learning on offer,
students can enjoy an exciting range of extracurricular
activities, from sports such as rowing, tennis, fencing and
horse riding to drama and music lessons. Our students benefit
from excellent facilities including a purpose-built theatre and
state-of-the-art music school.
Academic programme
Our goal is to enable each girl to discover her full potential
and the education we offer is built around the twin values of
breadth and balance. From Upper 3 to Upper 6, all of our
teaching staff are subject specialists with the expertise and
enthusiasm to stretch and challenge each girl, encouraging
her to work to the best of her ability. Our teacher/pupil ratio is
1:8 and our students attend leading universities including
Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College, Bristol, Durham and
London School of Economics.
The recent introduction of the International Baccalaureate
(IB) as an alternative to A levels in the sixth form is a reflection
of our commitment to preparing girls for life in a truly global
society. IB diploma subjects offered are: English, Chinese,
German, Spanish, French, Latin, classical Greek, beginners’
Italian (languages); economics, environmental systems and
societies, geography, history, philosophy, psychology
(individuals and societies); biology, chemistry, environmental
systems and sciences (transdisciplinary subject), physics
(experimental sciences); music, theatre, visual arts (the arts);
mathematics and computer science.
2011 was the first year that Headington entered students for
both the IB Diploma Programme and for A levels. Headington
students achieved an average point score of 38 out of a
possible 45, placing the school in the top ten in the UK. The
highest individual achievement was 44 points.
