Wellington College is an all-round coeducational boarding
and day school where education is for life, not just for passing
exams. It seeks to be a vibrant, inspiring and challenging
place that opens the minds and hearts of its pupils.
Wellington is deeply committed to all-round excellence.
This approach is underpinned philosophically by the belief
that everyone has eight principal aptitudes or ‘intelligences’:
mathematical or sequential (logical or scientific thought),
linguistic, inter-personal, intra-personal, aesthetic and
musical, kinaesthetic or physical, spiritual and moral
intelligence. The curricular, extracurricular and pastoral life of
the college are all designed specifically to develop different
aspects of these eight aptitudes, building confidence and a
sense of self-worth. Students also a study a course in
wellbeing, which helps them learn to behave towards
themselves (and others) in a more responsible way.
The school has also experienced the biggest ever
improvements in its exam results since league tables began.
There are high academic expectations of the pupils, expressed
through encouragement and support, with the aim being a
personal best. Nearly forty per cent of teachers have masters or
doctorates in their subjects and all are specialists.
Wellington College introduced the International
Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in 2008, and it has proven
to be a very popular academic programme for our sixth form
students. Its philosophy – of combining academic rigour with
breadth and depth – is very much in sympathy with the
college’s own. We offer a wide range of subjects, at all levels,
and we believe our support for the core subjects – the extended
essay, theory of knowledge, and creativity, action, service – is
truly world class, combining as it does academic expertise and
outstanding opportunities and resources. This is a school that
actively promotes excellence without compromising on ideals
that are embedded within the IB’s learner profile. Such an
approach ensures a balanced education.
The college is set in 400 acres of parkland; a significant
proportion of the grounds is set aside for sport, a major
strength at the school. At present there are 628 boys and 392
girls, of whom 226 are day pupils.
