Schule Schloss Salem is Germany’s most prominent boarding
school. In 1920, it was founded by Kurt Hahn, who
participated in creating the International Baccalaureate, too.
Salem aims to challenge young people with high academic
and extracurricular expectations and opportunities.
Salem comprises four beautiful campuses, all within 20
minutes drive on the northern arm of Lake Constance and near
the borders to Switzerland and Austria at the edge of the Alps.
The school consists of three divisions on separate campuses
for pupils of different age groups. These are Hohenfels Castle
(Lower School), Salem Castle (Middle School), and Salem
International College (Upper School).
From Year 8 onward, Salem is fully bilingual and offers a
dual curriculum. Students may either continue in the German
system or enter the international classes and study within the
IB Diploma Programme. Teaching prepares students for
independent thinking and self-employed learning. The
average class size is around 15 students. Salem offers
exchange programmes with top boarding schools worldwide.
University entrance is internationally oriented. Students may
follow a strong SAT preparation program and graduates
eventually attend the most selective universities in the US, UK
and Germany.
Involvement in extracurricular activities and the life of the
boarding community counts as much as academic
achievement. All students form Year 9 onwards must engage
in community service at least one afternoon a week. All
students also have to choose from a regular program of sports
and/or outdoor pursuits. Participation in theatre, music and
visual arts extracurricular programs, while not mandatory, is
strongly encouraged.
We believe that if our students are to internalize the
democratic ideal, they need to live it and create a kind of
‘polis’. Therefore responsibility for the everyday running of the
school is – according to their age and the ideas of Kurt Hahn –
placed in the hands of the students. School regulations are
framed with the consent of the student parliament.
At Salem, the aim of education is to build personalities, who
respect the individual, feel responsible for their environment
and have internalized democratic principles.
