important element in learning organizations and
leads to stronger teaching.
• Partnerships with universities
Many IB World Schools enjoy collaborative
relationships with higher education institutions
that not only offer professional development
opportunities to teachers and school leadership but
also offer a range of other services that support
school improvement initiatives.
School communities, IB professional development
leaders, universities and IB staff all play an important
role in making the IB teacher awards successful. For
Positive developments in IB examiner
training and recruitment
During the May 2011 examination session the IB
worked with over 7000 examiners. The role of an
examiner is an integral one that has a direct impact on
the reputation of an organization that is built upon
highly valued, quality assessment.
As the IB has grown, examining teams have become
more and more geographically distributed and as the
number of examiners has grown, face-to-face support
has no longer always been viable.
To address these issues the IB has developed an online
training platform through which examiners are able to
access courses specific to their needs as an examiner.
The courses cover the administrative, technical and
assessment focused aspects of the role and ensures that
Serving IB World Schools
support and information is always available.
The role of the examiner
Examiners and moderators are appointed by the IB to
mark students’ work according to a well-defined
markscheme or set of criteria. An examiner may be
appointed as a moderator of internal assessment to
review the original marking of teachers. Both roles are
highly valued and an essential part of any examination
session. The IB places emphasis on the professional
integrity, independence and academic expertise of all
individuals in examining positions.
More information on the role of an examiner and
copies of the application form and recruitment policy
can be found on the IB public website:
Training
Examiners, for most large entry based subjects,
undergo interactive, assessment focused online
training. The assessment training provided is intended
to help familiarize the examiner with the assessment
model and to identify how to apply the model at the
correct standard.
In addition to the assessment focused training, the
IB also provides administratively focused and
technical training, which provides examiners with an
introduction to the IB, explains how the examining
team is structured and highlights important
information and processes. The technical training
provided is a resource available to examiners to enable
them to utilize the IB’s assessment systems as
effectively as possible.
