Truro and Penwith College has a local and national reputation
as an institution that is lively, innovative, demands high
standards of its learners, but is also caring and supportive of
individuals. The college is situated in the west of Cornwall, a
county that is famous for its stunning coastline, surfing
beaches and relaxed lifestyle.
Truro and Penwith College came into being in 2008
following the merger of Truro College and Penwith College.
Truro College opened in 1993 as a tertiary college with 742
full-time learners. By the end of the academic year 2010/11,
this had grown to over 5000 full-time further education
learners and also approximately 12,500 part-time learners.
The college established a rapidly growing higher education
provision with over 1000 HE learners studying part-time and
full-time courses at degree and diploma level. The college has
established a highly successful business centre to meet the
needs of employers and learners in the workplace.
The college offers a wide range of academic (over 50 AS/A2
levels) and vocational courses to full-time and part-time
‘Top 1000 Schools’ supplement ranked Truro College in equal
first place as the most successful provider of the IB nationally.
The IBDP is delivered at our Truro campus, which has
outstanding facilities. The college offers an outstanding
enrichment programme to IB students, including induction,
residential, fundraising events and numerous trips abroad.
There is an annual visit to Swaziland where the group has set
up a charity to support AIDS orphans. All these activities
contribute to the friendly and supportive atmosphere found
amongst the college’s IB students.
Following one of the best inspection reports in the sector
and recognition as a Beacon College, the college has
continued to disseminate good practice. Truro College was the
first tertiary college in the country to be awarded ‘Designated
Outstanding’ status by Ofsted. The outstanding inspection
report was based on the success of our students and our
reputation is excellent.
The progression of IB students onto higher education has
been excellent with many progressing onto selective
universities including Oxford, Cambridge and a range of
medical schools.
The IB entry requirements are five GCSEs at grade C or above
with a grade A or B in subjects appropriate to higher level
options. Students can choose from 18 different subjects across
the IB curriculum.
