Parliament (MEP). Students focus and debate on political
issues affecting the continent today as well as find possible
solutions to pressing problems. Every year MEFIS is the only
school in the country selected to represent Turkey. In
November 2010, MEFIS hosted the 2010 Modern European
Parliament Conference, a conference awarded to a different
elite European institution biannually. Moreover, MEFIS also
regularly sends teams to local and regional Model United
Nations (MUN) conferences. This year students will
participate in MEP conferences in Macedonia and Slovenia as
well as in MUN conferences locally and in the Czech Republic.
Student Council and Leadership: The philosophy behind
student council is to empower students by providing
opportunities for students to have a voice on school activities,
ceremonies, fundraising, and school-wide rules and
procedures. In this way, the student council has a direct
impact on the social and personal life of the students at the
school. Both the primary and secondary student councils are
actively involved in the wider community through fundraising
events for local charities.
Academic Success
MEFIS is known as Istanbul’s premiere educational
institute. Every year our graduating students are admitted to
high ranking universities in the UK and Europe, the USA and
Canada. MEFIS middle school students scored well above
average in maths, science, and English on Cambridge
Checkpoint Examinations in 2011. At IGCSE, 67% of our
students scored A*-C in the June 2011 exams. Since IB
Diploma Programme authorization in September 1998, over
90% of our students have successfully obtained their IB
diploma. In the 2010-11 academic year, all of the pupils in the
IBDP received their IB diplomas. The average IB score of this
class was again above the world mean.
Our Faculty
There are 69 full-time staff members, representing over ten
different nationalities. All teachers hold a university degree as
well as a teaching certificate in their field of instruction. In
addition, over a quarter of the faculty hold higher degrees. The
student to teacher ratio is under 6:1 over the whole school.
Our Facilities
The school is situated in the heart of Istanbul. The facilities
are on a four acre campus nestled in the hills above Ortaköy,
only minutes away from the Bosphorus Strait in the midst of
residential neighborhoods, which is another reason why
MEFIS is preferred by the expatriate community. The facilities
were designed with modern educational methodologies in
mind. Our campus facilities include the following: over 30
classrooms, specialist rooms, individual learning support
rooms, four modern science labs, a library centre, two fully
networked IT labs, two soft surface playgrounds, an indoor
swimming pool, a gymnasium, three sport centres, a dance
studio, an outdoor football field, a tennis court, a concert
auditorium, and an outdoor amphitheatre.
