The Diocesan Boys’ School was founded in 1869 as the
Diocesan school and orphanage. Since then our school has
grown into one of the leading institutions in Hong Kong.
DBS is a direct subsidy school and the medium of
instruction is English. The school offers two curriculums: the
New Secondary Syllabus (NSS) and the International
Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) for senior form
students. The school received its official authorization as an IB
World School in May, 2010. Our IB section has 150 students
and there is a bridging programme in grade 10 for students to
migrate towards IB.
DBS is blessed with a committed staff that is steeped in
Diploma Programme experience and expertise. They are either
established examiners or aspiring examiners, with a desire to
pass on to the students their passion for their discipline.
We are delighted to be seeing our first cohort of the IB students
graduate through the Diploma Programme this academic year.
The DBS IBDP course is a multi-faceted programme requiring
not only academic application but a growing awareness of what
it means to be a part of today’s world.
DBS also takes special pride in the grade 10 IB bridging

programme, developed by our own IB staff. This is an excellent
preparation programme for the rigors of the Diploma
Programme. It is heavily skills based. The progress of each and
every student is carefully monitored via a thoughtfully
weighted continuous assessment. Entry to the bridging
programme is by application and interview and includes
ability tests in English, maths and either Chinese or French
with the underlying criteria ‘will this student benefit from an
IB education?’
Whilst the Diploma Programme is an academically
thorough one – it is about holistic growth as much as it is
about scholastic achievement. With our impressive range of
extracurricular activities, our privileged surroundings, our
academic mentoring system and excellent pastoral care; DBS
is providing a healthy mixture of the inherent traditions of an
elite Hong Kong school combined with an international
standard pre-university preparation.
