Western Canada High School is a flagship school of the
Calgary Board of Education.
The IB Diploma Programme has been an integral part of
Western Canada High School since 1981. We offer motivated
students up to two diplomas: an Alberta High School diploma
and the IB diploma (English or bilingual with up to three
courses in French).
It is highly recommended that students who hope to enter
the IB Diploma Programme in grade 11 arrive one or two
semesters before. This is to ensure that they have the
necessary level of English and other prerequisites to meet the
required learning outcomes.
We offer the following HL courses:
English A1, French B, history of Europe, chemistry, biology,
mathematics, and visual arts
We offer the following SL courses:
French B, French ab initio, Spanish B, Spanish ab initio,
philosophy, biology, physics, mathematics, math studies
(Mandarin and Cantonese off campus)
(Some IB courses not listed above can be accessed on-line.)
Non-IB options include: multimedia, computer science,
business, journalism, law, international politics, physical
education, leadership and many others.
Our co-curricular program offers a full range of clubs
(Model UN, Environment, Amnesty, chess, table tennis and
many others), fine arts (dance, drama, choir, band, visual art),
sports (cross country, track, swim & dive, badminton, soccer,
football, rugby, wrestling, basketball, volleyball) and trips
(Model UN, Spanish, band, leadership hostelling, physical
education hikes to name a few). Our proximity to the Rocky
Mountains gives students wonderful access to alpine activities
like skiing, snowboarding, hiking and climbing.
Western Canada High School students perform consistently
above the world average in their IB courses and our students
garner over a million dollars in scholarships every year. In
2011, one Western student earned a $150,000 scholarship to
Cambridge University (UK) and another received a $75,000 TD
Canada Trust Scholarship.
