Celebrating its 50-year anniversary in 2011, the International
School of Berne (ISBerne) has developed a well-respected
reputation serving the regional expatriate community,
principally the multinational corporate and diplomatic
communities, since 1961. The school has grown into a
multicultural community of 280 students, representing over
40 countries, at its campus in the village of Muri-Gümligen,
just 15 minutes from the heart of Berne, a UNESCO World
Heritage city, and the capital of Switzerland.
ISBerne students benefit from small class sizes, a highlyqualified
faculty, and language programmes. Graduates are
accepted at top universities around the world. The
programmes balance traditional international learning
philosophies with new and innovative methods including
online options.
Our dedication to excellence in international education has
been part of the school drive to develop as an International
Baccalaureate World School. The school’s Diploma
Programme was authorised in 1997, the Primary Years
Programme in January 2007 and the Middle Years Programme
in April 2007. We are proud to be an exclusive member of the
5% (182) of IB World Schools authorised to offer all three IB
programmes. Complementing the IB programmes is a fully
accredited high school diploma. ISBerne was first accredited
by the Council of International Schools and the New England
Association of Schools and Colleges in 1984 and reaccredited
in 1994 and 2004. Students at ISBerne are prepared for the
future, a life of challenges, understanding of cultural diversity
and the ability to work with others. With over 280 students
from 40 nations and staff from 12 nations we are an
international community.
The school operates a non-selective open admissions policy.
ISBerne welcomes applications from students who have
demonstrated academic and social skills, a sound character,
reliability and an eagerness to learn. Therefore, in the first
instance, admission to the International School of Berne is
based upon two criteria, the potential of the applicant to
benefit from the educational services provided; and the
capacity of the school to meet the educational needs of the
applicant.
Early Learning Center & Elementary School
Successful schools are built upon successful relationships.
In the early learning centre and elementary school at the
International School of Berne, we pride ourselves on
developing positive and enriching relationships between
teachers, students and parents. The choices we make, the way
we operate each day, and the philosophy we embrace places
the child at the center of all we do.
Our curriculum reflects a carefully considered balance
between guided inquiry and the acquisition of essential skills
in areas such as literacy, mathematics, the arts, sciences and
humanities. Our students are actively involved in the local
