Being and living in ‘The Heart of Europe’ provides the students<br />

with an ongoing direct access to the policymaking processes<br />

of the European Commission and other related organizations,<br />

NGOs, companies and delegations of countries worldwide. By<br />

initiating and actively being involved in creating ‘A Platform<br />

for Youth Participation’, the students obtain a hands-on<br />

understanding of the society at large.<br />

In order to be able to contribute to society, a proactive<br />

position and attitude is required. Therefore the students are<br />

coached to become true producers in all aspects of life. The<br />

variety of activities are determined by the demands and<br />

possibilities offered by their direct and indirect surroundings.<br />

The real adult society is their playground. The practise varies<br />

from organising and executing national and international<br />

outings and trips, taking care of full catering for a variety of<br />

events, creating and producing theatre plays, participating<br />

and presenting at international youth and adult conferences,<br />

producing and selling organic products and organising the<br />

yearly ‘Lease a Christmas Tree’ event.<br />

The students participating in this mixed age-range program<br />

benefit from the compatible approaches to learning of both<br />

the Montessori philosophy and the <strong>IB</strong> programme. The<br />

students are faced non-stop with challenging projects to help<br />

develop their intellect, autonomy, and sense of responsibility.<br />

The resigned attitudes and apathy towards learning<br />

commonly observed in teenagers have no chance to become<br />

fixed personality traits in the Montessori Middle School.<br />

Small group sizes enables us to offer each student an<br />

individualised relationship with the teachers. The two home<br />

teachers especially function like mentors. Together with the<br />

subject teachers they coach these students for the future by<br />

taking all aspects of their development into account. Children<br />

deserve to be individuals not exam numbers! At this age they<br />

need a listening ear. Fortunately small schools like ours can<br />

offer this personalised bond, which has long lasting<br />

consequences. Students are given a chance to develop into<br />

strong individuals who can be part of a group while making<br />

their own conscious decisions for themselves. They become<br />

leaders of groups that take constructive actions.
