Durham Gilesgate Sports College and Sixth Form Centre is a
coeducational state school. We welcome all young people
irrespective of ethnic, religious or geographical background.
The Sixth Form Centre has an open access policy and attracts
students from over 30 different secondary schools across
County Durham and the north-east of England.
One thousand sixth formers study a wide range of courses
including the IB Diploma Programme, A levels and vocational
qualifications, in premises that mix the old and the new. The
older part of the building has a long and varied history as a
grammar school and dates from 1913, whilst the newest
buildings, having been built in the last five years, include the
Hunter Resource Centre, and Freeman’s Quay Sports
Complex, with a 25 metre eight lane swimming pool and the
award winning Visual Arts Centre.
We are situated a short walk away from the city centre.
Durham is a World Heritage Site with its ancient market place,
Norman cathedral and castle and the prestigious university,
with which the centre has close links.
Extracurricular events and activities are both encouraged
and wide ranging in scope: from music and theatre to sport
and community service. Students participate in the Duke of
Edinburgh’s Award as well as World Challenge Expeditions. In
2011 students will take part in an expedition to Morocco and in
2012 to Thailand/Laos.
The centre welcomes students from all over the world. We
have been involved with the International Student Host
Programme for many years, and students from across the
globe study with us. We are also pleased to be building a
dynamic, cultural relationship with Teikyo University of Japan
in Durham.
Our students are lively and proactive. They are hardworking
and inquisitive with a love of learning. We hope to encourage
this further by broadening our IB Diploma Programme
provision in September 2012. At present we offer English A1,
French B, Japanese ab initio, Spanish ab initio, geography,
history, psychology, biology, chemistry, physics,
mathematics, music and visual arts.
