American School of The Hague (ASH) serves the educational
needs of the American and international corporate and
diplomatic communities in the Netherlands. ASH’s students,
ages 3-18, represent up to 70 nationalities at any time; 29%
are from North America.
While the school reflects the American educational
philosophy, the diverse backgrounds of the students foster
teaching and learning in the context of international
understanding and global citizenship. The American School
has a rigorous academic program. The high school curriculum
emphasizes preparation for university studies in North
America, Europe and students’ home countries around the
world. All students may earn an IB diploma in addition to a US
High School Diploma. IB Diploma Programme offerings are at
both standard and higher levels across the curriculum.
Students are given the opportunity to choose the IB Diploma
Programme (DP), or combine DP courses with Advanced
Placement or regular curriculum subjects to earn IB
certificates in subject specialities. A variety of DP language
courses – including mother tongue tutorials – are available.
Students who choose the IB Diploma Programme have
enjoyed a 100% success rate for the last three consecutive
years, and American School of the Hague consistently posts
scores higher than the world average. We pride ourselves in
engaging students in active learning at all levels. For example,
the school’s unique IB group IV project provides students the
necessary conditions using the local environment to ‘do
science’ for three days in the field. The project has become a
model for emulation by schools around the globe.
In addition, ASH students move with confidence to new
schools throughout the world, and 98% of each graduating
class enters university. The academic program includes a wide
range of fine and applied arts courses, with a curriculum that
is technologically competitive throughout the disciplines. A
full athletic program and extracurricular activities are an
important part of student life. Athletic teams in ten sports
travel throughout Europe competing with other international
schools. The Hague International Model United Nations, a
major event for many ASH high school students, is sponsored
by the school each January for more than 3000 international
participants. The arts program offers individual and group
instruction and performance opportunities in vocal and
instrumental music, movement and theatre, and the ASH Jazz
Band is well known throughout Europe. The 11-acre campus
has spacious classrooms, specialized teaching areas, and
multiple science and multi-media labs. The grounds include
outdoor sports areas for all age groups, including soccer and
baseball fields.
