Location
Rydal Penrhos School is in a wonderful safe and unique
location, nestled on the North Wales coast in Colwyn Bay, but
also on the doorstep of the Snowdonia National Park. It is also
within easy reach of Manchester and Liverpool airports, with
London less than three hours away, via an express rail link.
Ethos
Rydal Penrhos is small enough to care for each pupil as an
individual and large enough to offer real choice and breadth in
its academic and extracurricular programmes. Scholarship
and intellectual fulfilment are vital to allow pupils to move on
to the next stage in their lives, and these are the starting point
for all members of the school. As an IB World School we expect
pupils from an early age to think and work for themselves
within a global dimension, and we set great store by selfdevelopment
through indpendent reflection and learning.
Our recent review by the IB concluded with the description of
the school as offering ‘a high-quality international education
that refelects the values and aims of both the IB and the
school’s Methodist tradition’.
We welcome girls and boys from a wide range of
nationalities, and with a broad experience of religious and
cultural diversity. Our aim is to make sure they are fully
integrated in the life of the school. Our pupils have good
opportunities to travel abroad, on language visits, fieldwork
courses and sports tours, and to welcome groups from
overseas to Rydal Penrhos.
School life: inside the classroom and out
Small class sizes, coupled with an individual tutor system,
which monitors academic and pastoral wellbeing on a one-toone
basis, mean we can tailor the learning process to our
pupils’ individual intellectual needs and capabilities. We set
great store by self-development through independent
reflection and learning.
Rydal Penrhos School has the on-campus facilities to offer
sports such as rugby (2010 saw the opening of a new rugby
academy in partnership with the WRU), hockey, cricket,
netball and swimming, as well as squash, tennis, basketball
and even Eton Fives. However, it also runs a vast array of other
outdoor activities that exploit Snowdonia and the Irish Sea: for
example, sailing (the school is a Royal Yacht Association
training centre), kayaking, golf, climbing, gorge scrambling,
orienteering, mountain biking and skiing.
Curriculum
The school has offered the IB diploma since 2003, and has
produced excellent results from the outset. We provide the full
range of subjects at GCSE and a wide choice for IB (or A level)
in the sixth form as well as a pre-sixth/pre IB course.
Boarding
There are five well established boarding houses, each looked
after by experienced house parents and matrons who lead a
team of tutors drawn from academic staff. The Health Centre
and the central care team provide further support. There is a
full and well-supported out of hours and weekend activity
programme for boarders and day pupils to ensure good
integration of all pupils and a real sense of belonging.
