The British International School (BIS) in Jakarta sets the
standard for the provision of a first-class education to
expatriate students living in Indonesia.
Since its inception in 1973, BIS has developed into a leading
institution, with primary and secondary campuses for up to
1350 students, mainly British and Commonwealth nationals,
at its purpose-built campus in Bintaro; a leafy suburb on the
southern outskirts of Indonesia’s capital city.
One of the many distinctive characteristics of the new site –
opened by HRH Prince Edward, The Earl of Wessex, in 1993 – is
its unique structural style, designed to exemplify the best in
traditional Indonesian architecture. Housed in an impressive
18 hectare site, overlooking verdant fields, and filled with both
natural light and first-rate facilities; students have access to
gymnasiums, laboratories, well equipped music departments,
tennis courts, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, language
centres, a state-of-the-art BIS World Theatre opened by HRH
Prince Andrew, The Duke of York, in 2008, and modern
libraries including the new Dickens Secondary library.
International Baccalaureate at BIS
BIS is an IB World School with the IB Diploma Programme
forming the basis of the academic curriculum for Year 12 and
Year 13.
Our curriculum respects and guides individuals according
to their needs, while aiming to realise potential, foster
enthusiasm for learning, developing social skills within a
multi-cultural environment, and help students to interpret
and develop their roles in an ever changing world.
As a caring and nurturing school we are totally focused on
the students and their quality of learning. Staff and students
are respected and given every opportunity to contribute to the
operation of the school creating a healthy pride and sense of
belonging.
As part of our commitment to nurture responsible ‘citizens
of the world’ our ‘community, action, service’ (CAS)
programme is recognised as world class and has become an
exemplar to other schools. In 2007 our students won the
UNESCO Mondialogo Award and have followed this success by
becoming runners-up in 2008. We have since won a UNICEF
award for work in Indonesian prisons; a Finnish government
award for ecology; and a UNESCO award for work in the world
heritage site of Borobudur, central Java.
We are extremely proud of the achievements gained by our
students, which compare favourably with the very best schools
in the world. In 2010, 97 per cent passed the diploma with
point scores well above the worldwide averages leading to
enrolment in prestigious universities across the globe, such as
Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Yale, Cornell, Stanford, Sydney
and Melbourne. Most of our students go on to attend a top 20
world university.
