Founded in 1634, The Red Maids’ School is the UK’s oldest
surviving girls’ school and the only independent school in Bristol
offering both the IB Diploma Programme and A levels. Red Maids
are encouraged to be independent learners and they are given
every opportunity to develop self-confidence and autonomy.
The learning environment at Red Maids’ is friendly and
purposeful. Intellectual curiosity, energy and enthusiasm are
characteristic of pupils and teachers alike, so lessons are lively
and challenging. This is reflected in consistently excellent
examination results. This year our IB results placed us fifth in
The Times online league table. All aspects of teaching and
learning were rated as ‘outstanding’ in the 2009 inspection by
the Independent Schools Inspectorate.
Set in 12 acres of beautiful grounds, the senior school has
excellent facilities including on site sports facilities, a brand
new sixth form centre and a performing arts centre. The Red
Maids’ junior school is adjacent and offers a broad based
curriculum that prepares the girls for the senior school.
The Red Maids’ School became an IB World School in
December 2008 and IB diploma teaching began in September
2009. All students at Red Maids’ learn in a warm, supportive
environment that values community service, extracurricular
activity and independent learning. Diploma students are
therefore undertaking a programme which echoes and
reinforces the core values of the school, and will experience:
• a two year programme of quality teaching and learning
with a significant international dimension;
• a broad and enriching curriculum within a supportive and
sympathetic academic environment; and
• a rigorous programme that will prepare them for the
challenges of university life.
All students at Red Maids’ have the opportunity to opt for the
IB Diploma Programme having met the basic entry requirements
of the school. Currently between 10 and 20% of students select
the IB programme. Each year students from other schools join
Red Maids’ in the sixth form for the IB Diploma Programme.
We offer a good range of subject choice within the IB
Diploma Programme and always work closely with students to
try to ensure an appropriate individual course. The school has
excellent pastoral and academic systems that support and
encourage students in their choices.
There are many opportunities for students to complete their
CAS requirements, with significant opportunities for
extracurricular music, drama and sport and well-established
links with the local community. All elements of the IB Diploma
Programme are delivered by well-qualified and experienced
staff with IB training, and oversight of the programme is
undertaken by a member of the senior management team.
The purpose-built sixth form centre was designed with a
university campus in mind; it is self-contained within the Red
Maids’ site and enables sixth formers to work, eat, relax and
flourish in their own space.
