Do notACS International has a vision of nurturing future
leaders and global citizens within a Christian community and
its recent accreditation (after only six years of existence) by the
Council of International Schools is a testament to the quality
of the education provided and the structures in place to
support this. The school was founded as a private, not-forprofit
institution by the Methodist Church in Singapore in
response to the Singapore Government’s wish to make the
country an ‘educational hub’ in South-East Asia. As an
Institute of Public Character, with 50% of its 840 students
from 30 different countries within the region and beyond, it
has certainly played a powerful role in meeting this wish.
The school provides an education of genuine breadth for girls
and boys from age 11 to 19 within an international context, as
espoused by the IB and enshrined in its learner profile, which we
strive to embody. There are now over 250 students studying on
the IB Diploma Programme – from an initial cohort of 70 – and
the results achieved have been consistently of a high standard,
the latest cohort achieving a pass rate of 97%, and an average
points-score of 34; 14% obtained more than 40 points. The IB
programme is supported well by the IGCSE curriculum
(University of Cambridge International Examinations) which is
studied by students in the two years before the IB diploma, and
which provides a similar breadth of opportunity within an
international context.
There is a genuine commitment to providing a vibrant and
innovative environment for teaching and learning, with all staff
benefiting from the provision of continuing professional
development and collaborative work with each other to provide
the best opportunities for the students. Class sizes are small and
generally below 25 students, with a very favourable staff/student
ratio of 1:10. The house system provides the essential pastoral
support for students, and each student has a personal tutor to
monitor progress and to provide assistance where necessary; the
school also provides learning support for those with particular
educational needs, be they gifted or facing specific difficulties.
Our dedicated university and careers adviser ensures that
our graduands are well-prepared for the next stage of their
lives, and we have established an alumni organisation to
maintain the closeness of our community. There is also an
active and supportive parents’ association.
All students participate in our co-curriculum, which
embraces the IB philosophy of creativity, action, service. There
is a wide range of opportunities from sport and outdoor
pursuits, through to music, drama and service. Particular
strengths are found in the areas of leadership and character
development – aligned with the Christian values of the school
– and of community service, both locally and overseas. There is
also a commitment to the promotion of collaboration with
students in other schools through vehicles such as the Model
United Nations, international conferences and exchange
arrangements with schools in other countries.
ACS International is already a major force in international
education in Singapore and is well on its way to being the
international school of choice for the discerning parent in
Singapore and the wider region.
