St. Dominic’s International School, Portugal, is a highly
respected and well-known international school, and is the
only school in Portugal authorised to offer all three of the
International Baccalaureate Programmes, Primary (PYP),
Middle (MYP), and the Diploma.
Our commitment to the IB and its programmes has been at
the core of SDIS’ educational philosophy. The IB programme,
in our view, is an excellent curriculum for students in so many
ways. It teaches and encourages students to question and
observe perceived truths and beliefs. The principle of inquiry
based learning means that students actually learn to be
independent learners.
Situated 15 kilometers from central Lisbon, in the district of
Cascais, St. Dominic’s is a private, non-selective,
coeducational day school serving students aged 3 to 18 years
in the international community, through the medium of
English.
We currently have 49 different nationalities amongst our
student population, making us a truly international school.
The school is housed in two one-storey buildings. It has a
self-contained nursery/kindergarten that has recently been
expanded to provide two new classrooms for kindergarten
children. We have 48 classrooms, two gym halls, three art
rooms, two libraries, five science and technology laboratories,
music, drama, computer rooms and a multi-faith meditation
room. There are facilities for football, basketball and
volleyball. Other sports are played using outside facilities.
The junior school offers: English, Portuguese, mathematics,
social studies, information technology, art, music, PE and
social education through the curriculum of the PYP from
nursery to grade 5.
In the senior school, students in grades 6 to 10 study the
MYP, with full certification. In grades 11 and 12 we prepare the
students for the full diploma. The IB Diploma Programme
grants direct entry to the most prestigious tertiary institutions
in the world due to its intellectual rigour and high academic
standards.
Both our MYP and diploma results are consistently well
above worldwide averages.
Classes begin in early September and run to the end of June
with breaks for Christmas, Easter and shorter breaks midterm.
The teaching day is 8.30am to 3.30pm for 180 days.
