Tonbridge Grammar School has been ranked the top
performing IB state school in the United Kingdom by The
Times, for the third consecutive year. Founded in 1905, the
school is situated in 14 acres in Deakin Leas on the south side
of Tonbridge in Kent, ten minutes walk from the main line
station and within easy reach of local bus routes. Central
London is 40 minutes away. As well as a challenging academic
curriculum, rated as ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted, we offer an
extensive range of activities for students to broaden their skills
and talents and to discover new interests. The school
introduced the IB in 2005 and has now adopted the Diploma
Programme exclusively for sixth form study. Results have gone
from strength to strength. In autumn 2009, the school opened
a brand new building and underwent extensive refurbishment.
Classrooms are light, modern and well-resourced. Although a
selective girls’ school from Years 7 to 11, the sixth form has
been coeducational since 2002.
The school prides itself on offering a supportive and
dynamic learning environment. Students are expected to take
responsibility for their learning and are encouraged to be
involved in the vast range of enrichment opportunities, so that
they grow into confident and compassionate young adults.
The school has a strong international ethos and promotes an
outward looking approach, so that students think critically,
show initiative and are self-motivated. Alongside academic
studies, students are able to develop the broader life-skills
necessary through a range of service and leadership
opportunities within the school and the wider community.
We believe in providing a curriculum that develops creative
and inquisitive thinkers. A focus on mathematics, computing
and languages has led to exceptional learning opportunities
for many of our students. Each year a high number of students
attain places at Oxford, Cambridge and other leading UK
universities.
We are confident that the skills and knowledge our students
acquire enable them to be thoughtful, principled and
compassionate members of society. We instill in them a
curiosity for learning that can thrill and invigorate throughout
life, where they will take risks with confidence and have a
deeper understanding of the part they play in our world.
