Serving IB World Schools
The IB teacher awards
The IB teacher award – an influential credential every
teacher needs
The IB teacher award is a certificate that teachers gain
through completing professional development
provided by IB partner universities. It formally
acknowledges teachers’ understanding of the
principles and practices associated with IB
programmes and their commitment to ongoing
professional learning. We offer two awards. Level 1 is
for pre-service, beginning or experienced teachers who
want to develop their skills as reflective IB
practitioners, while level 2 caters for those
practitioners who truly want to conduct academic
research into an area of IB practice with the support of
university faculty.
Currently, we are creating a leadership and
management development stream for the teacher
award. We will be trialing that in selected universities
in 2012. This initiative will give educational leaders
and aspiring leaders the opportunity to build
leadership capacity through IB recognized courses of
study at the university level.
The IB is partnering with an increasing number of
prestigious universities around the world to offer the
IB teacher award programmes. Currently, the
following universities and institutions offer IBrecognized
courses of study.
Australia:
Flinders University, Adelaide.
Curtin University of Technology, Perth.
Murdoch University, Perth.
The University of Melbourne, Victoria.
Hong Kong:
The University of Hong Kong, Pokfulam.
Turkey:
Bilkent University, Ankara.
United Kingdom:
The University of Bath, Bath.
ECIS, London.
United States:
George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia.
Oakland University, Rochester, Michigan.
Benefits:
• Job opportunities
It can be difficult for good teachers to find positions
in IB World Schools due to their inability to
demonstrate their IB knowledge and experience.
The IB teacher awards enable these teachers to gain
a qualification that ensures that they can deliver
high-quality teaching that aligns with the IB
philosophy and values.
• Value add to a school’s talent profile
Teachers holding an IB teacher award have already
fulfilled the IB professional development
requirements for authorization and evaluation.
Schools that hire these teachers will benefit from
their commitment to developing students with the
attributes of the IB learner profile. Any further
investments schools make in the professional
learning of these teachers will add value to the
school and student outcomes.
• Reflective practice
All of the IB-recognized university courses
emphasize developing teachers’ capacity to
critically reflect upon their own practice. The
transformational effect of reflective practice is an
