IB Asia Pacific Programme Update
2011 saw exciting growth in the number of PYP
networks in the Asia Pacific region and in what these
networks have undertaken and achieved. There are 18
active PYP networks operating in Asia Pacific with more
in the pipeline! Asia Pacific networks are expanding
the way they support member schools in the
implementation of the PYP. An increasing number of
networks are using online programs and forums to
facilitate and enhance collaboration and sharing.
Some networks have also hosted guest speakers at
their meetings and shared professional development
events that support best teaching practices.
IB Asia Pacific has a very active group of MYP
coordinator networks. Generally these network groups
try to meet face-to-face once or twice a year. Between
face-to-face meetings communication is maintained
through the use of Basecamp forums. Within these
forums members post examples of good practice, field
inquiries and discuss various issues related to
programme implementation. Through these groups IB
educators have been very successful at developing
common understandings of many aspects of
programme implementation.
Across the Asia Pacific region, some 10,677 students sat
the May 2011 session IB diploma exams from 245 schools.
This is a 10.75% increase in the number of candidates
from 2010. The pass rate in Asia Pacific currently stands at
87.69% compared with worldwide pass rate of 77.70%.
The mean grade is also slightly higher in Asia Pacific at
5.08, compared against the world mean of 4.65. Of the 93
students who achieved the maximum 45 points, 25 were
from the Asia Pacific region.
The largest number of candidates sat their exams in
China, India, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore in
that order. Exams were conducted in 25 Asia Pacific
countries with students of 140 different nationalities,
testament to the intercultural diversity of the IB
diploma candidates in Asia Pacific.
4000th IB Programme Milestone
IB Asia Pacific
The continued growth of the IB in Asia Pacific reached
a milestone in 2011 with the announcement of the IB’s
authorisation of its 4000th programme. Taihu
International School in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, of the
Peoples Republic of China authorized to provide the IB
Diploma Programme became the IB's 4000th
worldwide programme provider.
