St Clare’s is an international college founded in 1953 with a
mission ‘to advance international education and
understanding’, something it has been doing successfully
ever since. The college embraces internationalism and
academic excellence as core values. It is a coeducational day
and residential college that has been offering the
International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme for over 30
years, longer than any other school or college in England.
Students from over 40 countries study at St Clare’s including
British students. The atmosphere is informal and friendly with
an equal emphasis on hard work and developing personal
responsibility. Each student has a personal tutor who oversees
welfare and progress.
Most students are enrolled for the full IB diploma. St Clare’s
has an especially wide range of subjects on offer at higher and
standard level and, in addition, currently teaches 28 different
languages. The college takes a small number of transfer
students each year. For students not ready to begin the IB
Diploma Programme, a one year pre-IB course is offered with
additional entry points throughout the year. There is an
extensive programme of social, cultural and sporting activities
and students are encouraged to take full advantage of the
opportunities that Oxford provides.
The college also runs a highly successful IB Institute
providing introductory, refresher and revision courses for
students. St Clare’s is also authorised to run IB workshops for
both new and experienced teachers in co-operation with the
International Baccalaureate Organisation.
St Clare’s is located in the beautiful North Oxford
Conservation Area. It occupies 27 large Victorian and
Edwardian houses to which purpose-built facilities have been
added. These include a beautiful library building with over
35,000 volumes, an IT suite and a Careers and Higher
Education Information Centre, four science laboratories, art
and music studios, dining room and the popular Sugar House
Café. Students live in college houses close to the central
campus under the care of residential staff.
The college welcomes applications from students irrespective
of gender, race, colour, religious belief or national origin. Entry
is based on previous academic results and interview. There is a
competitive scholarship and bursary programme awarded by
examination, interview and group exercises.
The most recent Ofsted inspection of pastoral care and
boarding at St Clare’s was rated ‘Outstanding’ and in 2011
three of our students achieved the perfect IB score of 45
points. Full details of the college’s excellent examination
results and impressive university destinations can be accessed
