Westwood International School was founded in May 1988
under the sponsorship of the British and American
governments and several local companies, in collaboration
with the Botswana Ministry of Education. Its educational
program extends from reception through to Year 13. The
school year, beginning in January and ending in December,
comprises three trimesters: mid-January to mid-April, mid-
May to early August, and mid-September to early December.
Organization: The international curriculum is designed to
meet the needs of students transferring to or from US, British,
or international schools abroad. The elementary school was
authorized to teach the International Baccalaureate (IB)
Primary Years Programme in 2005, following the school’s
authorization to offer the IB Diploma Programme in 2002. The
school is currently phasing-in the IB Middle Years Programme
and, in Years 10 and 11, offers the International General
Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE). Textbooks and
resources are sourced internationally to meet the demands of
the international programs offered, the bulk being ordered
from the USA and UK. The school offers a range of student
support services including: learning support, English second
language support, counseling support and career and college
guidance. The school is fully accredited by the New England
Association of Schools and Colleges and the Council of
International Schools.
Faculty: There are 51 faculty members.
Facilities: Westwood is located on a custom-designed 4.6hectare
campus with 37 classrooms, a library, two recently
upgraded computer centres, and a modern office building. A
school auditorium with sound and lighting completes the
buildings. The school offers a fully equipped competitive
swimming pool and a learner pool, along with basketball and
tennis courts, as well as two large playing fields for soccer,
softball, cricket and athletics practices and matches. The
classrooms at the site are modern in design, well-equipped,
air-conditioned and internet-connected. There is a
comprehensive after-school program offering a wide range of
sporting, creative, cultural and community-service related
activities.
Extracurricular Activities: Extensive and varied
extracurricular activities include sports, cultural activities and
community service. Activities are offered by teachers and
parents, and in some cases are charged for separately.
Educational trips are a regular feature, with primary and
secondary students making extensive use of the local area for
curriculum related trips. By this means the international
curriculum is embedded firmly in the local context, and
valuable lessons are learned about the host country. Overseas
trips are also frequent, for academic, cultural and sporting
visits.
