The Newman School, founded in 1945 in the heart of a great<br />

city, provides a diverse student body a college preparatory,<br />

liberal arts education, based on moral values, intellectual<br />

rigor and trust, guided by the spirit, vision and philosophy of<br />

Cardinal John Henry Newman.<br />

Situated in Boston’s Back Bay, The Newman School is within<br />

short walking distance of the Boston Public Library, Symphony<br />

Hall, the Boston Ballet, the Museum of Fine Arts, and the<br />

many colleges and universities – including <strong>Harvard</strong>, Boston<br />

College, Suffolk University, Boston University, and MIT – for<br />

which Boston is world-renowned. Of the 240 students (grades<br />

9 through 12), international students comprise approximately<br />

one quarter of our student body. Homestays are arranged<br />

through an established network of experienced families<br />

known to the school. The school is approved to issue the I-20<br />

required of students seeking approval for student visa status.<br />

Authorized as an <strong>IB</strong> <strong>World</strong> School in January of 2009,<br />

Newman will be implementing <strong>IB</strong> courses across the<br />

curriculum over the next few years. Two years of pre-<strong>IB</strong> courses<br />

will prepare students for the <strong>IB</strong> Diploma Programme. Students<br />

who will not be working towards the <strong>IB</strong> diploma will<br />

nevertheless benefit from the integrated curriculum. All<br />

students who meet the standards will receive the Newman<br />

diploma. Newman is accredited by the New England<br />

Association of Schools and Colleges.<br />

For the academic year 2010-2011 <strong>IB</strong> diploma candidates will<br />

choose from the following courses: English A1, Spanish A2,<br />

Spanish B, French B, English B, history of the Americas,<br />

economics, environmental systems, biology, chemistry, math<br />

studies, math, visual arts, business and management, Italian<br />

ab initio, and music.<br />

Newman students participate in the following sports and<br />

extracurricular programs available at the school: boys crew and<br />

girls crew (fall and spring), sailing (fall and<br />

spring/coeducational), soccer (fall), cross country<br />

(fall/coeducational), boys and girls basketball (winter), tennis<br />

(spring/coeducational), and baseball (spring). Extracurricular<br />

and enrichment activities include: the literary journal,<br />

newspaper, SAT prep, recycling, Model United Nations, chess<br />

instruction, mock trial and a broad range of service opportunities.
