Steyning Grammar School nestles below the South Downs in
the small historic market town of Steyning, West Sussex. It was
established in 1614 and, although proud of its traditions, it is
now a large high achieving state school with 480 in the sixth
form college. The school was rated by Ofsted as good with
many outstanding features.
The school is fortunate to have two sites with extensive
grounds and historic buildings. There are good study
facilities, including over 1100 up-to-date computers and a well
stocked library. There are also excellent sporting facilities
including: a sports centre; a fitness suite; a swimming pool;
an all weather pitch and extensive playing fields. The sixth
form college has its own centre including a common room,
cafeteria and private study facilities. The school is well located
in terms of transport access. Gatwick airport is less than 45
minutes away; Heathrow and Central London are only 1 hour
15 minutes.
The school has accommodated boarders for 400 years and
now boasts one of the most modern, state-of-the-art boarding
facilities in the country. A high level of personal and pastoral
care is provided for each and every individual boarder. There
are three houses, (one for boys, one for girls and one mixed
sixth form house) all offering exceptional facilities for study
and recreation. The new £5 million boarding facility
complements the existing houses, steeped in their own
colourful tradition and history.
The school has a strong academic ethos within a supportive
learning mentoring system. Students are individually targeted
and supported through a tutorial system. The school has been
a successful A level centre for many years with a good record of
student entry into higher education. It gained international
school status in 2008 and became an IB World School early in
2009. The IB Diploma Programme was launched in September
2009 and we were pleased with the results of our first
graduates.
The sixth form college is a vibrant community with a long
tradition of extracurricular activities such as sport, debating,
drama, music, community service and raising funds for
charities. This has enabled the setting up of a very extensive
CAS programme. Sixth form college students have the
opportunity to participate in a wide variety of enrichment
activities including theatre trips, fieldwork, foreign
exchanges, peer mentoring, debating, Duke of Edinburgh’s
Award and representative sports.
